Could be something to do with the de-tuned nature of the TDCi in the Defender application. The 2.4 Transit produces 135 bhp but the Def only 122.

I would imagine some of it is also down to the Transit's generally smoother and cleaner shape and that some of the power is not being sapped by the drag of the additional cogs, gears and live axle in the drivetrain.

Apparently the modern Transit is more aerodynamic than the E-Type Jag...
The 4wd will also account for a few mpgs. Hi all by the way, I've been lurking on here for some time, reading posts while I try and decide what Defender to buy next. |

^ lol - this is the quandary I'm facing...
I've recently sold my Defender 50th, and I've been test driving both TD5s and TDCis several times now, and I'm still unsure - i would have to gear-up a TD5 to make it better on motorway, TDCi has the 6th gear, TD5 is cheaper, TDCi has better heating, demisting etc etc. Guess the first really good example of either version that comes in-budget that I drive I'll end up buying! Tdci has better mpg then a td5, might be worth considering in this time and age, aswell with the co2
 going on

Yes - this is mainly why I am changing from my lovely V8 50th to an oil-burner... I've been reading the 'how many mpgs' threads with interest - but there seems to be wildly different results - I would like to think I would get at least 30, maybe a bit more out of one driving it gently. I'm not sure whether a TD5 with the ratio change would equal a standard TDCi on fuel? Anyone had direct experience of both? |

Driving 300's TD5 and the TDCi - it is better in every respect not just one.
MPG is a weird one with the rack and tent on its doing about 27/8mpg if i hammer it i think it goes to about 26.6 Ill see what the winch does when i fit that. Mike |

why not have a remap on the ECU up it to 135 bhp see if you can get more mpg that way
I'm getting 27 / 28 mpg with full roof rack and roof tent with foot hard in the floor

I think im going to - but its been an expensive 3 months and being a pilot - the hourly rates when i rent is - well eye watering, (my new plane in my club is £4.15 a minute)

Is £4.15 with fuel?
Whats the MPG of a plane then ? more or less then 27 /28 MPG

£4.15 yes is "wet" so with fuel.
Whilst i do the performance calculations ive never worked out MPG. range is key - but with a couple of hundred mph easy - you get where you need to be  Mike |
