external monitor....
Hi,

Just bought a separate monitor for my lenovo laptop.

I've managed to get it to work but it would nice to be able to close the laptop without the monitor turning off. Is it possible and if so how?

Many thanks.

You might find on the function keys, there is an option to toggle for external screen. 1999 Defender TD5 110

thanks - yes there is an F key to toggle but once the laptop lid shuts it goes off (the external monitor that is).

looked in the power settings ...... and yes that's cracked it. "do nothing when plugged into mains and close lid"

Thumbs Up

wouldn't have had a clue where to find that Thumbs Up

If you have an external monitor why don't you run it as a second screen and extend your desktop across both screens. I do this and it's great having more screen space to play with.

Or is there another reason to just use the external monitor..?

Cheers

Simon

once again thanks v much all up and running.....just need to find to work to pay for it now (Smile).

anyway after getting a new laptop and monitor I have the old 'tank of a desktop with no use'...
it's about 15 years old. 256mb of ram - its a hp pavilion on windows XP with 17" fst.

is it worth anything - seems a shame to dumb it?

Also be careful of temperatures. Quite a few laptops have cooling ducts that run around the screen hinge. Have seen a hp laptop with a melted screen from running with the lid closed.

hi,

just to say the Lenovo / Samsung monitor as going really well and no melted screen nor any appreciable difference in temp with the laptop closed.

going back to my earlier question re; the old hp pc - should I just dumb it or do you think it's worth trying to sell it - presumably only any use on ebay?

Can't think it would be worth anything at that age/spec.
If it was a bit newer and running a supported OS, I would have said offer to donate it to a local club / society, but it's probably past that.

Just a thought re. your laptop - you may already know, but there are vertical desktop stands you can place them in, saving desk space and aiding ventilation.

thanks - thought that might be the case (hence I've got rid of it myself).....

my daughter might perhaps want the 17" fst monitor?

like the idea of the laptop holder but to be honest it all seem just fine as it is now, so as the saying going if it ain't broke don't fix it.

(clearly this saying doesn't apply to defenders Smile)
