Thanks Pob,
Does anyone have any idea/views on whether this interim DIY service would be a good a good time to swap to a K&N filter? As a biker, obviously this a quick a popular upgrade, but I have no idea what (if any) difference it would make to a Defender. To help with advice/answers I drive a 2011 110 SW, 2.2 Puma, entirely unmodified, with approx 55k on the clock. Had last oil-change/service under warranty in Nov 2014. Hi, I am always a bit wary of K&N's as there is the other logic that they can pass some dirt through if not cleaned and oiled regularly. With engines the cleaner the oil, fuel and air are the better as you know. I think I would stick to genuine filters but change more often. 110 Hardtop

Does this suggest that the cause of the pump failing is known? If so what is it? |

The dirtier they get the less they can pass - I wouldn't be too worried about that. They are a very robust solution. The only issue I can see is actually over oiling one and having the oil drawn into any sensors upstream. |

Hi, well the issue with K & N's is really about trapping the dirt - as in is it oiled enough. I do not profess to know the solution but it makes sense to have nice clean oil running through the oil pump, the more particles of soot, sludge or diesel in the oil the more likely the pump is going to have a hard time. Maybe the Ford problem is finding the weakness in the owners - builders who drive transits who don't necessarily look after the oil or oil levels that well, delivery vans getting a hard life etc etc. I think for my own peace of mind I will be changing the oil more often than once a year or every 12000 miles.
I will change mine at least every 6 months 110 Hardtop |

Changing oil earlier with have absolutely no impact on the suspect oil pumps.
We've had over 30 fail, ranging between 4,500 - 19,000 miles. If the vehicle has one of the faulty batch pumps fitted, then you could change the oil every week, it won't make a blind bit of difference Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Interesting, are you a Ford mechanic then?
I will still change my oil more frequently, I have already bought the oil and two filters. 110 Hardtop |

Not purely Ford, but commercial vans etc [Over 50% are transits, we deal with about 1100 a year!]
You'll do no harm changing oil more frequently on a sound engine, But doing so won't prevent an oil pump from the suspect batch from failing, you'd just be wasting your money Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

I'm sure I recall one of the tuners on here testing K&N filters on the Puma and finding they were worse than the standard one. I may be getting in a muddle though.

I had K&N filters on the td5s and it doesn't make a difference.
I also think it affects the MAF sensor. On the puma i have now i won't be putting one. Fabio |

Correct Jo
Pete at BAS, did some rolling road tests on standard and after-market "upgrade" filters, IIRC a K&N made no difference whatsoever, ? maybe a detriment !! All my Defenders, 200Tdi to all the Puma's, have had the oil/filter changed, every 6 months, irrespective of miles to the 12 month full service California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |
