Alternative to Checker plate
These have just popped up on a Landrover group on FB,

Not into checker plate but this I like!

Like the idea but the Defender cutout will attract all sorts of debris and scratch that bit loads. If there was a way to fill with another colour contrasting piece of metal it would be perfect 110 D250 SE HT

I was thinking more of a solid piece to fill the gaps so it's smooth on top. No chance of sharp bits getting into the cut outs 110 D250 SE HT

I don't think it would be practical. Unless it's got a special paint, could be slippery to stand on. If it's thin steel, or Ali, it may bend under the weight of a typical defender owner. Painted surface could be scratched and scuffed by anything other than slippers.

Loads of other useless stuff gets fitted to defenders. It will look great with 20" satin black alloys.

Was pretty sure that type of plate had been seen before - certainly last year - but can't find any photos of it - did remember this different but similar approach:

I like that alot. Definitely not as practical as checker plate, but way more useful than unprotected fender tops.

Also prefer (quite like) the non-checker plate wing tops,but they ain't cheap so I'll stick wi not standing on mi front wings. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I suppose if you NEED checker/tread plate then this would be no good,
but maybe 85-90% of checker plate will be just for show anyway?

I'll agree with that.

If you don't need checker plate why would you ruin a set of perfect panels by drilling lots of holes in them. Rolling Eyes
Someone is going to make fortune in 5-10 years time undoing the err, fashionable, mods of today.
What will those mods do to the resale value of a vehicle when a prospective owner realises the cost of fitting new panels and a respray to get it back to standard?

Wow, that 80" looks great with checker plate in unnecessary places.
Or
I'm really pleased uncle Bertie sprayed the range rover metallic purple in 1974, then fitted 8 spoke wheels.
