Battery Light, No Rev Counter and Temp Gauge at the top?
This has happened twice now and on both occasions there has been a pattern. It hasn't happened everytime, just twice in the last 2 weeks.

Engine turned off (after being driven), keys left in the ignition, then about 5 mins later, start the engine and the battery light remains on and the Rev Counter isn't working and the temp gauge goes right to the top (temp is actually normal operating temp).

So, stop the engine, restart, still the same, stop the engine restart again, and all goes back to normal.

I know that normally if the battery light is on and rev counter stops, it's usually a case of the alternator not delivering power, but didn't think the temp gauge gets affected. Both times, after I've fixed it, I thought about looking at the battery power on OBD2 as I've got one connected all the time but forgot both times.

I had a lot of things connected today (didn't last time), Sat Nav, GPS, Phone, VHF radio and lights on and everything drove fine whilst the problem was there, so suspect that the alternator is fine, just a glitch somewhere.

Similar things happen with low battery voltage on Td5's, but don't know if it applies to Pumas? Does it start OK? I remember reading about temp gauges doing weird things when the battery was on the way out. It has happened once on mine on a particularly cold winters morning when on starting the temp gauge flicked right up to the top, but shortly after settled back to normal central position. Thanks for the answer, but the battery is fine. It's only 2 months old and never had any issues with it. It's often left for a week without starting and always fires up fine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the electrics, but maybe something wrong with the control of them or maybe just the dash itself. Craig Rogers

Do you always use an ultra gauge or similar, see this and this thread and check the relays and large fuses under the drivers seat, fuses 15 and 30 in the main fuse box and also check the plug into the rear of the instrument panel.

On the Puma, the rev counter signal comes from the engine ECU via the CAN-Bus, as does the charge indicator light signal. The alternator signals are fed to the engine ECU.

[edit] Just re-read your first post, try leaving your diagnostic tool disconnected to see if that stops the problem re-occuring.

Ah Bingo!

There is another bit to this pattern that I've now realised......

I have an OBDLink MX device constantly connected (the OBD port is repositioned, hidden away), both times this happened, my phone was running Torque which is connected to the OBDLink MX via Bluetooth. Wierd how it's never happened before, but this last 2 weeks it's happened twice.

Same problem here.
Got occasional issues as described in this thread: Batt light on, rev on 0 but engine runs fine, Temp on max
Couldn't figure out the reason why this happened. Now it seems it happens always when I go somewhere far. Never at home. Started to look for the symptoms on the internet and after hours and hours found some threads on these including this one!

Seems i have the same kind of gremlin here.

Funny enough it happened only on long trips. Then analysing coincidences, I've noticed that when I drive locally or on close distances I rarely plug my BT dongle in. Thus I don't recall it ever happened on short trips around home.

Instead when going far and offroad I always use it to monitor engine params , temp , etc. And I leave it plugged in. In this case it sometimes happens (i.e. sometimes twice a day). Not always, but much more often. OFC disconnecting battery solves the problem ... Im was wondering why - ofc it does so as it cuts the power to the BT Dongle and ECU so all is fresh again.

Im going to leave it connected now and see if it happens when Im doing lots of short trips. Will keep you posted.

EDIT: One more coincidence; im was also using Torque as the dashboard software.

This set of problems (battery light, 0 rpm, temp at the top) means the instrument pack has lost incoming CAN bus messages.

It does seem that some OBD dongles affect the bus and therefore stop the CAN messages from the ECU either being transmitted or received.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

indeed , especially that I get errors

P1643 CAN Link Engine Control Module/Transmission Control Module Circuit/Network

Might be because Torque on the Android Phone is running in background and there is some colission/coindicente/timing issue on the CAN bus disturbing communication just at the very beginning of the enigne run cycle .

i had this also, it was crusty terminals on the ultragauge may be caused by condensation?
i used a terminal contact cleaner and a tooth brush on the OBD plug and then coated with ACF50,

Will check this as my Puma is my2007 so that might be the case. However Im suspecting rather the OBD-BT adapter incompatibility issue than any contact/condensation problem.

Pick any proper OBD-BT adapter.
I bought mine here https://viaken.pl/pl/polski-elm327-v3-blue...-2015.html

With this adapter and proper soft I can read i.e. injector corrections, etc.
It cant read Security module - at least Im not aware it can.
