The Australians seem to think that this could be caused by the handbrake dragging. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Ive also heard the handbrake and diff answers - also mine had something to do with a lack of greese nipples on the prop shaft making noise like that Mike |

Just to add: the new TC had nearly no slack (few degrees) when locked. The current one has 45º of free rotation on the front shaft. To check on this you need to remove the front propshaft and lock the central diff. Puma 110" SW

The Puma gearchange should be sooo smooth. Don't let the dealer tell you that clunking is normal. It isn't.
If you have a dragging handbrake fix this first. If it still clunks then it is the clutch. Austen. Rover 12 1935 Rover 20 1940 Rover 100 1960 Defender TDC1 2008 FL2 TD4 2008 |

Ill clarify - the gearbox change should be smooth - but the box shouldnt be a smooth as a manual freelander or car - there is still a bit of ruggedness in it! Mike

I just got mine back from the garage. I was given a manual Freelander as a loaner in the meantime. Gearbox was quite smooth.
My Defender's clunking issues are nearly sorted. Much better than before, but I still get that weird clunk/pop sound when moving off - it doesn't seem to be related to the gearbox, but rather something else that moves with the momentum of the vehicle. The secondary clunking is gone, and the gearbox seems to be a bit stiffer, in a good way. |

The clunking is the backlash from the Defender's permanent 4WD setup. My Td5 had it, and my 2010 Puma has it, although to a much lesser extent.
I get rid of it by making my gear changes smoother and you get used to it after a while. |

You will NOT get rid of the clunking completely in a Defender - many have tried, and failed. It's just the result of the drivetrain's setup. Yes, you can tighten things here and there to minimise the backlash, but you will never get rid of it completely |

I'm on gearbox No.2, still have various aspects of the gearshift that seem to go beyond 'rugged'...
I noticed that the diffs seem have more play in them than any previous LR products I've had - how much free rotation have people got in the handbrake drum before the back wheels start to turn (in neutral)? I imagine taking up this slack is part of the clunk problem, particularly as you engage the clutch and apply power when the diff is being driven by the rear wheels between gears (I can't do a lightning shift without beating the syncro, so there has to a a pause which is perhaps allowing the the diff to from driven to overrun and back again) 1953 80 1965 Alfa Romeo GT Veloce Sprint 1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2008 110xs |
