Wheel carrier and bumperette combi

For all of you that are facing the problem of fitting a rear wheel carrier combined with rear bumperettes, I thought it would be a good idea to offer my experience, because at the beginning I was really confused on this issue.

After a brief talk with Brendan (leeds) who helped me a lot with various alternatives and combinations I ended up choosing the Safari equip dual pivot point rear wheel carrier with high-lift jack mount. This can fit perfectly combined with the extreme 4x4 rear bumperettes that I already had installed and I guess are more or less the same dimensions with the Safari ones.

The installation of the wheel carrier itself was a bit tricky as I was told by my mechanic who was used to install mantec ones but for once more with the help of Brendan (at the last moment since I lost the instructions that he sent me in the first place) everything was fine.

After all, a big THANKS to Brendan for all his support and some photos that I took in order to get the idea of the wheel carrier - bumperettes combination and the snow cowl that I also got.

Those bumperettes do indeed look very similar to the Safari ones...

Any chance of a close-up of the lower mounting, and how it works with rthe bumperettes?

The swing-away is on my shopping list too

Sorry for the small delay Martin.

Please find below the photos that I took where the attaching points are shown.

The bottom bracket of the wheel carrier is attached on the screws which hold the bodywork to the rear crossmember while the rear bumperette sits lower and is attached directly on the free holes of the rear crossmember.

Last photo shows the top bracket which is attached directly on the bodywork using a reinforced plate on the back for extra strength.

I have Safari Equipe bumperettes, and i like them a lot. Already saved a rear corner from a bit of damage

At some point soon-ish I'll get a swing-away, but I don't want to lose the bumperettes - yours looks an excellent solution.

I am glad I helped with the photos and thank you for your kind comments.

I also had the same questions about the combination but Brendan was always there to help me choose.

Greeni the jerry can holder would be a great idea but is it allowed to carry fuel like this?

There'd be "issues" with that in the UK on an RHD vehicle due to the rear fog light being obscured by the jack. I guess you'd have to relocate the fog light somewhere (must be on or to the offside of the centreline, of course).

A nice set-up on an LHD vehicle though.

There are several available options for wheel carrier/bumperette combinations, including reworking some bumperettes to fit if necessary.

I've had my safari equip bumperettes remodeled (£30 from a local blacksmith) to remove part of the inner bracket of the bumperette, and reduce the depth of the bracket by 5mm. You can see the LH bumperette still fitted. The swing-away is a wonderful stainless one from Brendan at 4x4overlander

There can always be issues when people buy aftermarket kit from different manufacturers in are they compatible with each other.

Nakatanenga are planning on doing rear bumperettes to work with their wheel carrier.

Safari Equip had to modify their rear bumperettes when they introduced their single pivot wheel carrier. Personally I am not a big fan of carrying a high lift jack outside the vehicle.

Now BW point about obscuring the rear fog light does raise some questions and interpretations.

A rear fog light is an obligatory light under the Vehicle Lighting regulations so has to be operational etc.

However under VLR

19. Every vehicle shall be so constructed that at least part of the apparent surface of any–

(a)front and rear position lamp,

(b)front and rear direction indicator, and

(c)rear retro reflector,

which is required by these Regulations to be fitted to a vehicle is visible when the vehicle is viewed from any point directly in front of or behind the lamp or reflector, as appropriate, when every door, tailgate, boot lid, engine cover, cab or other movable part of the vehicle is in a fixed open position.

Now a rear fog light is not a rear position light so where does it stand legally if obscured???

I do not know, I carry our high lift jack inside the vehicle.
