I went with a group of mates for a drive around a logging forest in Bala at the weekend. Amazing scenery and fantastic tracks but not for the first time one of our guys got it badly wrong on what looked like a simple track.

I tell you what, I could show you a video from only 4 years ago with a lot of the same guys and you'd laugh your heads off at the basic errors. You live and learn! Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos.

I cant find the picture but basically just a fisted sized dent i the front wing. Got away with it very lightly but then it was a very slow roll Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos. |

The strop on the left was a loose wrap around the tree and we played it out as the truck came up. It was wrapped round the base of the tree 3 times and the loose end was controlled by the person on the left. It gave us fine control of the position of the truck. All winch rope was synthetic and the team were communicating all the time through the recovery.

1st line was on his rock sliders. Yeah do you know what, I didn't complete agree with the bloke playing the strop out but as Couplands said it seemed to work. What the situation didn't need was lots of chiefs so I let it go Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos. |

Great video .
Just goes to show how easy it is for it all to go wrong !! And as they say, never go alone ! The extra resources made for a faultless safe recovery . Cheers thanks for showing it . |

Well thought out and executed recovery that avoided and further damage.
Really bad luck it happened though... YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Question?
OK So say he had gone alone. I believe he has a winch on the front as he has could he have got that up on his own? |

Yes I think so, 90 degree to winch, snatch on tree back to snatch on tree slider ( towards rear) off to a fixed strop on another tree. If there was a gap anywhere under passenger side a snub line attached to chassis to aid tipping motion. Problem might have been battery power as no engine at the time. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

If he was on his own he would be well advised to have a Tirfor with him, rather than just the front mounted winch. Front winches are generally more useful on other vehicles, not the one they're mounted on. A Tirfor will work anywhere, and you don't need the engine running to keep the battery charged. I know that it is easy to be wise after the event, but I am surprised that he drove into that seemingly without appreciating the risk and the inevitability of what was about to happen. I bet he's more on the ball next time! A well-executed recovery, bearing in mind the compact space and that it was done without further damage. I am not so sure about the bloke who stepped over the winch cable though, that isn't sensible ever, at any time. |
