I think your original thought on a Fabia VRS is a good one Thumbs Up

Also think an Octavia is a great car and the diesels seem pretty bullet proof - that's probably why so many taxi's around here are Octavia's Thumbs Up

I am a huge VW fan but wonder whether with your budget you'd be better going for a slightly younger / lower mileage Skoda rather than paying the VW premium.

I have a Lupo Sport, which was a friends engineering degree project, with a 'built' 1400 engine, lowered on German suspension and steel wheels, it's genuinely more fun to drive around the lanes than my 911 was.
Though it's too low geared for long runs (my friend got a job at a Motorsport transmission place, so put low gears in it), it's definitely a blast on country lanes and traffic light drag racing.
It could well be up for sale soon as the v8 90 will take its place (a nice economical motor! It's all about smiles per gallon, not miles. ).

Going back to the topic, I do like a tuned diesel Fabia Thumbs Up

A friend of mine has a Toyota yaris diesel. 60 mpg he swears by it, I`ve been looking after it for him for the last few years never done more than service and brakes.
My self I think the japanise diesels get over looked. His wife has a 17 year old corolla that`s bomb proof too. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
