Fiesta or Focus. No doubt. Cheap road tax, good on fuel. loads around.

Plus...go into the garage for exhaust/disks/pads etc... Fords will be the best-known brand, and spares are everywhere. Taking a citroen into the garage, the mechanic will probably start with a suck of the teeth.. "hmm, they changed the layout 3 times in that model, I'll get the VIN and check the parts database...it'll be special order". Ford..."no probs sir, got one of them on the shelf" Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Google says its about 4.5 hours.
Personally, I would want a decent, comfortable car for that, even think about getting an auto.

Fiesta?.... nah.
Golf TD, aye, not bad at all if you can get a decent one for £3K.

And that's the issue. You won't get a £0 road tax vehicle for £3k!

Compared to the fuel costs, road tax is a pretty small part of the overall costs.
Keep us posted on what you end up buying - it's always a dilemma!

Laughing It's only for 2 years. Unfortunatley I bought a my dream house about 15 yrs too early, but it does have a nice view and I couldn't go back to military quarters.

This will be a third car, I'll still have the Defender and a Subaru Outback as required. Ack comments on the auto and a bit of bulk for safety......deffo one to consider.

Cheers for all the comments so far.

If I was in your position, I would go for something older, preferably without a dpf and other EU satisfying gizmos that unfortunately cost a packet when they go wrong.

Peugeot 406 HDi, ideally an executive.

Good on fuel, probably the most comfortable thing I have ever driven- and the saloon ones crop up for pennies, parts are cheap and plentiful.

My dad had one as a company car that he passed on into the 'pool' fleet at work at well over 200,000, the odometer stopped working at 240,000 ish and it ran on for another 2 years before the clutch gave out and was not worth repairing! The local taxi firm who used to fuel up at the garage that I worked also ran a fleet of them most of which were well into the 200,000s.......

Cheers

Chris

I have a C1 as a commuter (and Motherhome tow car), but my commute is only 10 mins!

Wouldn't bother with the diesel, the petrol is far better and I get well over 60mpg ragging around the country lanes. It's a couple of years old, cost me £4k and is the top spec VTR+ although still not a lot in there, also has the optional alloys and a/c which is hard to find. Tax is £20, new ones are free. Insurance is very cheap and I've just bought a service kit for £20!

Would I want to drive it on a long run? Yeah, why not? I never have though so not sure what it would be like. Craig Rogers
