Tow bar electrics - trailer light with no trailer
Hi, just purchased a new Defender (after about 6 years of Discovery ownership) and have fitted an aftermarked towbar. I went for the dedicated electrics kit, with the socket on the end, so simply connected to the plug hidden behind the rear offside lights. I've not had a chance to connect it up to the trailer yet, but without the trailer connected the trailer indicator light on the dashboard flashes once every time I indicate. I've been told by the place I bought the kit that this is normal, but didn't do it in the demonstrator I borrowed from LR (with factory fitter towbar).

Is it normal and do I need to fork out the £160 for the LR wiring loom to avoid it doing this - it's a bit irritating!!

It is normal and correct that the trailer repeater flashes once (with the first flash of the indicators) if there is no trailer connected. If there is a trailer, it will continue to flash with the indicators.

If it just flashes once when you indicate then that's normal, it is doing a check to see if there's a trailer fitted or not. Just hope that it will keep flashing when there's a trailer attached Whistle

Thanks all! Have to admit I didn't notice it doing it without the electrics connected, but I've not driven a couple of hundred miles yet! Embarassed

It won't do it if you have an RDX relay, only if a trailer is connected.
