Double Din - Apple CarPlay
I know there was few people interested in Carplay but dubious about its performance. We have been testing the Alpine Carplay unit that we have standardised on as our install offering and I have to say, if you are an Apple iPhone 5/6 user who only uses digital music it is an absolute winner !

Sound - Simply Excellent for a Standard Stereo. We have 4 x R series Alpine speakers and an 1200 slimline sub running from the head deck (no amp) and the sound is great. 4.5 Stars

Nav - We had concerns on the Map Data coming from the phone but it uses the route replication perfectly there is no drop outs at all on your journey. It uses the GPS module in the phone and not the Data signal like a lot of people thought. 5 Stars

Screen - almost as good as an iPhone, Alpine have put a lot into this making sure the scrolls and screen touches are similar to using the iPhone.. 5 Stars !

Apps - Apple music and Spotify are excellent, excellent user interface, replication of albums and playlists is great, album and track pictures come through again 5 Stars !

Bluetooth - It doesn't have it ... Which is great !

Messages - Reads messages back when they come through ... Brilliant !
Message comes through :
Siri says "You have a message from ........." (Then Reads Message)
Siri Says " Do you Want to Reply ?"
You say "Yes"
Voice recognition allows you to speak your reply into the mic

Siri - As above , one press of the siri button allows you to do a host of things like "Call Blah Blah" " Navigate to" etc etc .. Only downside is you have to shout when at speed (because of the road noise) other than that , very very good. 4.5 Stars

Overall you can see why Alpine took their time to get this right .. 100% the future of Car Audio/Media.

So that's not a double din space they have in the dash then? ... Shocked

Just looked to be much bigger than a normal radio slot from the pics... Question

It's designed for the iPhone only so there is no need for Bluetooth. All of the iPhones main features are active when the phone is connected. (Navi , phone , messages , music and radio)

The parrot one is truly great. They also just announced their prototype next generation double din unit with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB, OBD diagnostics built in via cable, built in NAV and included forward recording/dash camera!

Not sure how far off though....

The alpine looks ok as you said, but for me just lacking BT. Cheers, David

David

Yes BT would be good as I use Garmin app on my iphone for nav as it works great with my Parrot Asteriod I want to replace with double din unit. Alpine one would be good as I can add slimline Alpine amp I have behind the unit as it will not work with the Parrot.

Yeah they're all good options.

I went for the parrot purely because say a year down the line i can just download the latest tomtom or spotify app etc, or really any android app, and because it was cheap to be honest!

The alpine would probably be more restricted in capability but very well designed and reliable, and CarPlay is very cool. Just don't know what happens when uou need NAV but don't have signal? TomTom on mine has the data stored on an SD card rather than over the air. Cheers, David

I'd probably agree with David here, if I had to choose it would likely be the Parrot.

My biggest concern with the current units is just how 'future proof' they actually are.
Tech is moving so fast especially with Apple that it can leave you in either a costly position or with an obsolete unit.
