Failure of heated screen
I have just changed my heated screen due to the original one not working.

It has no moving parts and is not damaged, how can it fail?

The only defect that I can see is that there is traces of corrosion on the electrical tape sandwiched between the sheets of the glass. I notice that on the new screen (from Masai 4x4) the bottom and top of the glass is sealed with a black paint.

I was looking for option to repair the original (as a spare)....doesn't seem likely. thoughts please?

Chris

You need to get the circuit tester out. Check for continuity on the main elements, and the connectors at the bottom of the screen
The elements do break, and corrosion can cause electrical faults.

Had heated screens on my 90 for about 16-years and while I have never had one fail completely, breaking of individual elements is very common. It can be after just a couple of years that a misty or frosty screen will clear but leave stripes which take a bit longer to clear due to elements breaking. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

I have exactly the same symptoms as you describe with mine.

Have already started to fault find, but haven't managed to work it out yet.

With mine it just doesn't work ata all. Nothing is heating up. Have viewed it with a thermal vision scope. No change in temp compared with non-heated parts of screen.

I have done a continuity test and that is fine.

The voltage supplied is correct.

I have checked the current draw and that is what I would expect too.

I have replaced the earth for both windscreen and relay.

No joy.

The only thing I can think is that it is somehow shorting to earth somewhere but not enough to blow the fuse, ie mimicking the screen working but without heating the elements.

Anyone got any other ideas? 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top
