Cold Temprature Diesel Problems | |
A funny thing happened today:
A friend with a newish 110 Puma called to say his engine was cutting out and loosing power. (Main dealer serviced and only 20k miles from new) After several days of driving very short distances at slow speeds (in snow chains) and queuing stop/start traffic the engine had decided to play up. Temperatures have been -5 to -10 degrees Celsius for about 3 days here. He brought it round and sure enough it wouldn't do more than 20mph without cutting out and the MIL was on. After driving about 3 miles in Hi 1st gear at tick over speed, as fast as it would go without cutting out (which the other road users off) it cleared and ran fine; even on full power up a steep hill.
Despite my friend having added Cold Temperature Anti-waxing additive to his last tank of diesel we are sure it was a waxing problem. If I remember correctly the Puma recirculates the excess diesel to the filter rather than the tank so it could have warmed the filter enough to clear the wax.
My questions are:
1) Has anyone experienced similar problems.
2) By leaving the engine running on tick over for 20 minutes on a morning has he exacerbated the chance of wax accumulating in the filter. I find the Puma engine takes ages to warm up properly unless its driven hard.
I'd better go and check my 110 Puma now - fingers crossed!!!
