The Defender maps are different to the Transit, so his Transit remap won't be right for your Defender.
If you want/have to remap, consider the replacement cost of the engine should something go wrong because you tried to save £100 or so   1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

what is different about them? why would a transit map kill the defender engine?

Well, they are totally different vehicles with totally different drivetrains and customer requirements for a start.

And I'm not saying it WILL kill the engine, but a Transit map is not designed for a Defender and vice versa.
Any number of analogies spring to mind but I'm not that mean  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Jah boet, not worth saving 100 quids on a remap.
Rather get a proper one that's tailor-made for the Defender.  --

There is a very good reason why Pete at BAS, Gary at Alive and Ian at IRB have got a very good reputation for remapping Defenders.
They are simply good at what they do!
YES there is lots of other people who will 'remap' your Defender for you, yes they will probably be cheaper in the first instance. However when you have to go to one of the above to sort out the bodge job that someone who has done a generic one size fits all remap then any savings has gone right out of the window. I believe it was Pete at BAS who first cracked the Defender 2.2, he has a rolling road to test his products on. Believe Alive now has a rolling road, sorry I do not know if IRB has its own rolling road. A rolling road is a considerable investment to ensure that they have got the remaps correct. Since you are at Rotherham none of the above are a long way away from you as well. Why risk the engine of a £30,000 vehicle to save £100? Personally I would not let anyone but the above 3 loose on remapping my Defenders. Brendan |

I do live in the South and Pete Bell provided mine hassle free, it did make me chuckle the lengths people will go to to perhaps save a little money.... You've a vehicle that is only a year old cost ballpark £30k plus and wish to save perhaps a ton by remapping to a totally different vehicle specification? Why not ask Gary or Pete what they think of your 'plan!' You've stopped taking your medication haven't you?

Personally I would tend to agree with Brandan and K9f but not wholeley. There are many Land Rover specialists that have spent tens of thousands of pounds and hundreds of hours developing tunes for all models of Land Rover including the defender, most of which have rolling roads. (I.e Gary at alive, Pete Bell, IRB, Monster Tuning, JE Engineering etc) I agree Gary, Ian and Pete are the top 3 but plenty of companies are capable of doing brilliant work with regards to tuning the defender. I have used Gary, je engineering and monster tuning for tunes on customers vehicles numerous times and have never had an issue with any of them. People tend to stick with what they know and are totally against accepting that someone else may be perfectly capable of doing a job to the same quality but doesn't have the same name.
The long and short of it is that 9/10 people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a car mapped by any of the above. Just my 2p worth |

speak to pete bell iirc he will load the map onto a new ECU and send to you complete plug and play and you have a spare ecu if you ever want to change it back for mot etc

It's amazing nowadays when an engine not only appears in 1 manufacturers range of cars, but a wide range of manufacturers cars.
The 1.6 HDI Engine's found in Peugeot/Citroen's appear in Ford's Volvo's and Mini's. The 1.6 THP Peugeot/Citroen Prince engine was in the last generation Mini Cooper S. |
