Poor contacts on the starter motor, battery terminals loose or a poor earth. By just giving all the relevant terminals a good tug and twist you may find the problem.

As JWL says.
If batteries are fully charged/charging, it won't be anything to do with alternator. Going to be an earth connection somewhere, loose terminal/connection, or starter/solenoid. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

I've had that through loose earth clamp on the battery, obviously applicable to the positive pole too.

From your description I suggest it maybe a starter motor solenoid problem. I'm long of touch now with working on cars but in my youth it was a regular problem that the solenoid not engaging correctly. Assuming the design has not changed tapping the starter with a hammer may be a temporary fix.
However a push start from some helpers and off to a good local mechanic is required. |

Leave it in gear and rock back and forth in case the starter is seized, a simple test and may just work!
But as above say I would try the earth and battery clamps, also check relays under drivers seat 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

Hi thanks everyone, I'll take the day off Wednesday, earliest I can do anything and recheck all battery terminal connections plus earth. Move through to the alternator plus starter motor connections, only thought alternator as lights works no dimming or failures elsewhere. _______________________________

Check that the main and (especially) starter relays under the driver's seat are secure and the connections to them are tight - a very common problem on Pumas.

Don't know how accessible the starter motor is on a Puma but if you can get to it try tapping/ knocking it with something a bit weighty it may be a stuck solenoid and this may free it off, used to be a common problem on pre engaged starter motors years ago. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Seen a few 2009/10 2.4's at work where the starter is , get it out and strip it down only to find the armature completely smashed to pieces! This turned out to be caused by the ignition switch causing the starter to engage when engine running. I always replace the switch at the same time now

There was a TSB a while back for that problem - the starter remaining engaged due to a switch fault.
I ahve heard also of the starter becoming so thick with clutch dust and debris from disintegrating clutch springs on the Puma that it fails. |

A little update, couldn't work on it until today, replaced the main vehicle battery neg connector, crimped a new one. Didn't make any difference but replaced it as I was unhappy with the original crimp.
Checked the other connections battery connections but did not remove batteries to check the buzz bars....... So after checking batteries for holding charge still I thought I put it in gear and rock it, next problem on a slope, no chance to rock backwards as slab behind. So thought I'd have a cup of tea and as usual what seems like a bright idea comes along, basically put into gear and winch it from the tree in front, yes winching worked but didn't cause the assumed solenoid fault to pop. Released winch and thought sod it I'll clean the engine, a little while later nice clean engine and bay. Next bright idea, out of gear and try the jump lead from battery positive to starter motor positive, yes for those who know as do I now you've no chance in a Puma. So time for another tea. Out with the iPad and check the names recommended by CaterineF (thank you) 😄. A quick call to one of the Robs at Harfords 4x4, very helpful especially as I've never dealt with either him or the garage. Explained the problem and he thought based on my diagnosis it could be starter motor but obviously he'd need to see it. Said I couldn't be sure I could get to him, he said to bump it and if that failed he'd collect it. Now here comes the next problem, on an upwards facing slope with gate almost immediately to my left. When it runs its a forwards, backwards forwards shuffle. So no power not likely SWMBO can assist with the push, she's having back treatment. So I winch myself forward of the tree, yes tree strop used, get forward handbrake on maximum left lock. 😄😳. Remove larger strop and fit around brick gate pillar, have to close this gate or strop would bend the gate. So let out winch changing lock and then winch in and up to gate, then apply brakes. So now at the gate, remove strop open gate and now the steepest bit of the slope to overcome. Having had another tea I'd cunningly parked SWMBO car on the road, well track. Strop fitted to rear axle and winch forward, going great until a very large tractor comes along, unhook move the car and said tractor driver waves and drives on 😁.so car forward, winch in and nose out through gate, brief SWMBO on bump start procedure, get her to slowly pull forward out of gate and straight down the officially called road, into second drop the clutch and yes first time start, beep horn flash lights to SWMBO yes she tried to carry on 😱. Land Rover 1 Citreon 0. Long story short she was engrossed by dogs walking up the road....... Now battery light illuminated, not charging, speak to Rob, who advises I check all the connections including buzz bars as it will save costs as that's the start point for him. Nice friendly advice, so Saturday will be dual battery strip out, re crimp have borrowed a better pneumatic crimp tool from work and whilst at it fit new Anderson jump start kit. 😃 So a bit of a comedy of errors, to be honest the little voice in the head kept saying battery connections, still Land Rover ownership trials and tribulations. If anyone's awake after this and can be bothered I'll update on Saturday, still could be something else but time will tell. _______________________________ Puma Defender 90 |
