Hi,
My father has got a 59 plate 2.4 tdci 90. He is complaining that when approaching junctions, roundabouts etc, taking his foot off the throttle and vehicle goes into overrun, a surging occurs as the engine revs drop. The vehicle itself will jerk back and forth until it almost comes to a standstill. When the surging is happening you can see the rev counter bouncing up and down, but only very slightly. So far, the engine has had two faulty injectors replaced and also an EGR valve. However the fault was there prior. No engine management light on and no stored codes. Has anyone come across this fault, or have any ideas as to what may be the cause. Thanks, Simon |

no is the honest answer but just wondering.
do you think there's any chance this could be a mechanical problem (running gear / gearbox) rather than the engine? |

Honestly, we are still trying to work that out ourselves. My father thinks engine but I lean towards mechanical.
Its very difficult to put the fault in to words. I thought it may be a bind on the handbrake, but that would always have an effect I would have thought. |

I know what you mean.
contrary to what everyone on here thinks I believe I'm reasonably ok with mechanics...... that said after 4 years of thinking I had an intermittent engine issue / electrical problem I'm hopefully going to find out later this week it was the clutch (can't wait). bearing in mind how long it's taken me to realise it might actually be the clutch (to be fair there's be enough of other problems to send me off in the wrong direction) I certainly wouldn't rule the clutch out...... are there any other 'issues' that might be clutch related ie switching engine off with or without the clutch depressed - does it behave differently? is take up always smooth how does it sound on tick over with / without the clutch depressed? good luck.  |

Caterham: he has never mentioned any clutch related issues but I will check with him tomorrow. I know that they are a common fault of the puma. I think his 90 is on around 50k, original clutch.
