Wheel Studs - Standard or Long
From MY-2014 onwards is it the same length of wheel studs that are fitted at the factory, irrespective of whether you have standard of HD steel wheel rims fitted by the factory?

There have been some discussion as to whether current models need to retro-fit 60mm extended wheel studs (FRC 7577) if changing to a set of HD Wolf Rims. Also views expressed elsewhere about having wheel nuts that appear not fully engaged.

Definitive answer appreciated.

My friend visited the other day in the brand new 130 Fire tenders they have had delivered at his station. They run the Wolf HD rims with standard studs. The nuts sit about 1 mm proud of the end of the Stud. This is normal and as they come from LR Special Vehicles so I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Look at it another way. You have 5 nuts with 20mm of thread each = 100mm of thread. On the HD wheels you only have 95mm of thread. Is it worth changing studs for another 5mm of thread?

I've owned a few 130s, the oldest being 1997 and none of them were fitted with what is commonly referred to as long wheelstuds. As above, if it's good enough for Land Rover then you don't need to waste money on longer wheelstuds

Already lived through 6 winters with original HD Wolf wheels supplied by LR on same wheel studs as my dual finish wheels. If longer would be needed, Land Rover surely would have said so. They can not afford to compromise on safety for accessories they themselves offer.

If they have a line on the end of the stud they are ok for hd rims if not then they will need to be changed 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

I've seen three new Defenders with HD wheels through work, all have had the standard studs which leave a mm or so proud as mentioned above.

If it's good enough for Land Rover then it's good enough for me Smile

Mine's a MY13 and came with the "standard" length wheel studs.

Reading more about the topic, I came across an acticle/posting that suggested that the longer studs were only meant for the earlier vehicles with rear drum brakes. The drum was a lot thicker than the discs and therefore you could not fit a HD wheel on with the standard studs. Hence the longer studs were meant to be used with the drum brakes.

Not sure if this is true, but it does seem to fit the facts, especially since LR don't seem to use the longer studs with any disc braked vehicle now.

The British Army fit Wolfs to drum braked vehicles on Std Studs and merely torque them up more

That is consistent with the Puma WSM which gives the following torques:-

Steel wheels 100Nm/80lbft
Alloy wheels 130Nm/96lbft
Heavy duty wheels 170Nm/125lbft

It is interesting also that the note "Wheel nuts must be tightened by diagonal selection" (ie the way I have been brought up always to tighten such things) is applied but only to the standard steel wheels.
