Bought a 'one man' basic bleed kit from Halfords, doddle to do but the pedal now feels softer than it did before I didn't keep going for long with the pedal as after the first 2 or 3 pumps the fluid expelled via the clear tube had no obvious air bubbles. Should I have kept going longer? Andy

Which "one man bleed kit"? If it wasn't the one that uses air pressure from a tyre your probably pi55in in the wind,Gunson Eezy Bleed is the one you want,a bit of ptfe tape around the brake reservoir in case of leaks, even then they can be awkward sometimes, the other type tend to suck more air back in thru the bleed nipple when you release the pedal.
