Embarrassing noob question
Hi folks. Please be gentle
I picked this defender up last week and am only today getting to be having a look around it.

Am I correct in thinking that the gear knob for the hi/low ratios should be twisted clockwise 90deg ??
Can seem to move it much at all unless I have bought a total screw up !! Sad

you move it forward and back for High and Low (high being forward)

You move it left and right for difflock ON/off. (left being ON)

not sure ive explained properly but it doesnt turn. you will just pull the knob off it lol. if it wont move L/R F/B then the linkage could be seized.

I would just like the knob to align up with its directions of use properly.
Is it common for the mechs to seize up? Confused

I put a pair of those ally gear knobs on my 300tdi & could never get the transfer gear knob to line up,no matter how much I turned it. Crying or Very sad

From looking at your picture the high/low gear knob isn't correctly aligned to the way the lever is operated.
The High / Low is in an H shape;

| _ Low
Diff |
| _ Neutral
Lock |
| _ High

I presume you're in High range at the moment. It should push forward towards the main gear selector to go into neutral and then again to go into low. Pushing to the left from High / Neutral / Low should engage the Diff Lock

Maybe I should just unwind it till it lines up
Pop a bit of ptfe tape on the threads to keep tight?

I was playing with this earlier on and the selector is happy going side to side
But not willing to go back n forward Sad

From stationary try clutch down, select first gear and keep clutch down - the move the transfer box lever up one into neutral. You should then be able to bring the clutch up even though your in first gear the transfer box is in neutral.
Then repeat this process again moving from neural into low but be prepared to move off as you are in low range and will also make more torque.
To go back is the opposite process.
I personally like to change on the fly so you want a low speed I.e. 5 to 10 mph and you should be able to slip righ across between hi and low.
98% of the time you'll never need low box and it's not for on road use, only low speed pulling, manoeuvring or greenlaneing.
Take more care going from high to low as it's much lower gearing. Any change should ideally be under no load but that's not always possible or a necessity.
You'll soon get the hang of it, you should never need to force it.

Thanks for the explanation lads.
I wont get a chance to have a look at it till morning, I'm takimg it to work tomorrow
to allow one of the technicians to check the whole thing over for me.

Fingers crossed that I havent bought a squib! Confused

It's probably stiffened up through lack of use. Sometimes a long fast run to get the t-box really hot can help.

Tried the, selecting hi/low while moving trick and everything seems good
It was just stubborn while sitting stationary.
