big current needs big switch!
Could use big relay, and small switch? Marine relays go to a few hundred amps usually... Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

Thats the sort of approach - both Warn and Land Rover have that option, better than those battery isolators - just after some options on type. Im aware of the current etc (although i also know its not as big as always thought) Mike |

What sort of winching are you doing? Heavy duty competition winching or just occasional self recovery? At full winch power a winch can demand 400-500 amps and that is why some of the serious comp boys use 50or 70mm2 cable For self recovery at a pay and play site you are hardly likely to need that current. Double line and you half the winch power required and roughly halve the current required. Next do you need to isolate the winch? If your winch controls are inside your cab and solenoid pack high up in the engine bay then all you are doing are isolating a short section of cable from the battery to the solenoid pack. The solenoid pack acts as an 'isolator' to the winch. If you have a winch wander lead socket externally mounted then you might consider a power isolator as a security feature against people being stupid with paper clips etc So if you do want an isolator for your winch choices are 100 amp isolator. 100 amp continuous rated or 500 amps for 5 seconds (?) Fairly small. Cost around £7 mark 200 amp isolator. 200 amp continuous rated or 1000 amps for 5 seconds (?) Much bulkier unit. Cost around £21 mark 100 amp relay would cost about £25 plus cost of another switch mount etc say £5-10 200 amp relay would cost about £35 plus cost of another switch etc. On our red 110 overland vehicle we have 2 winches and external mounted wander control lead sockets. Have a single 100 amp isolator to both winches as a 'security' feature On Puma will probably go for internal controls and no isolator switch. HTH Brendan |

MSE, if it were me I would use the 200A relay from VWP:
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-...s.php#high Same one was included in my IBS split charge setup, they are well made, and in the Disco I have 35m^2 cable and dual batteries never had any issues with too much current (so far). Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

Bear in mind the Goodwinch TDS current draw is not massive especially compared to some others so that Switch is ideal for them but maybe not for other makes Cheers

Good option if you want demountable winches, however dependent where you locate the Anderson connector I would put an isolator switch in the circuit. Have some photos of how some Baltic lads did demountable winches front and rear somewhere which I can dig out if people are interested Brendan |

Thanks guys.
I probably should say im not new to this. My current 9.5ti winch (personally the best winch for a defender...dont discuss ) obviously has the electrics in it. I had the set up cibit has in the last 90 and im sorry its that im trying to avoid - as its not too bad granted without the key - but with, its not to my taste. Manual isnt the way - so that rules out anderson connectors Tallpaul - thanks i shall have a look at that. I may reconsider the warn option Mike |

MSE was your warn fitted by LR? (agreed, 9.5ti is best on a fender ) aha. Ours came with an isolation switch, just small and discreet. 110 Tdci Double Cab
