TD5 Relative Compression
Hi All,

Just ran a relative compression test on the TD5. Going to do a manual test tomorrow on all cylinders, but for now ... what do people think to the readings. Look reasonably tidy to me, but just wondered if there were any expert eyes that could take a look. The random spikes are most likely due to the fact it's not quite a Pico Wink ... So not quite as refined!

I do also have a video showing the white smoke out of my PCV pipe as well as one showing injector balance. This is all part of my rattle problem I'm trying to resolve. Trying to rule out any major engine issues!

Those videos though are currently uploading through my phone network so may take a while Sad ...

Injector balances are really a bit of a waste of time unless you've got a dead miss somewhere, seen many people lead up a very expensive garden path with them on a motor that in actual fact has nothing wrong with it. Seen much worse blowby than that as well if I'm honest. Whats the noise your trying to track down?

I've got a rattle that sounds diesel knocky to me. There's the potential that it's Clutch/DMF, but to be honest. I dont get any other Clutch/DMF symptoms except maybe a little slip when really pushing her at the top, but it's not obvious if so ...

I have just done a Manual Compression Test on each cylinder using the Injector port. Whilst the Dummy Injector tool is good, it's a bloody nightmare to get seated well and lead to several duff readings ... IMO it needs a little redesign to use the outer walls to get a straight fit!

Here's the results ... (All in BAR) ...

Cyl 5 4 3 2 1 -> Front
27 30 26 29 28.5
28.5 30 26 27 25.5
N/A 28.5 30 31 31

All a bit sporadic tbh ... They all went 1-5 and the third run I lost battery after No.4 so no last reading for 5.

What do people make of them?

3 quick questions,

1- Does it start first flick of the key in the morning or do you have to bump start it for 5 miles with another vehicle?

2-Does it smoke like it's running on coal at full load?

3-does your noise disappear when coasting?

1. Starts first flick fine. Had trouble when the injector seals went but fine since.

2. Never noticed much if any smoke. Can't see out the back of mine at all so not 100% on this but even when she's pretty much foot flat on the floor there's nothing obvious out the wing mirrors. Small waft of white sometimes on initial start up.

3. I did origionally think so yes. However just recently I have wondered if its very very slightly there even coasting down a hill for instance on the clutch. But it might just be me thinking there's something very very slight!

You sound like you have a theory?

A little off topic I know but,

On viewing your first video clip I noticed your using a Delphi diagnostic program. I`am looking into buying one of these or at least a clone copy. I just wondered how you find it, and what does it cover i.e. will it give access to a 2011 my 90.

As for your injector balance all looks ok may be you have a slightly dribbling injector / spray pattern issue. Perhaps a course of fuel cleaner might help. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

It took them a while as it seems mine were down the priority list, but it seems one of my injector solenoids was well out of tolerance.

As to the Delphi, yep, will read your Puma 90. Will read more info than it does for the TD5 as your's conforms to OBD standards. Nice units indeed!

Dont know yet. They still have them. They're trying to source me another injector which they can then refurb but it isn't proving easy at the moment. Even sources of new one's are quite thin on the ground at the minute apparently.

Once everything is back I shall endeavour to let you know mk1! Trucks out of use until then (obviously lol)!
