Hello All… Can I have your help
![]() I removed a door bolt recently, on the bulkhead side of the hinge, and in doing so heard a sound like a rejected coin in a parking meter... ![]() Two problems immediately presented themselves… 1. Unlike, or possibly like a parking meter, no rejected part fell out the bottom of the Defender. 2. I need to fix this. ![]() Click image to enlarge So my fix currently is to remove the hinge block, or swing it out of the way enough to insert an M8 Long Reach SS Rivnut, (shown in photo) then probably adjust the plastic / rubber separating layer between the hinge and the bulkhead to sit around the head of the Rivnut in situ. (The top bolt failed and is currently plugged to stop water getting in). This route currently looks more attractive right now than trying to get to the missing (non) retaining nut or at least the position where it should be and install a new (better) retaining nut within the Bulkhead. ![]() Click image to enlarge I assume that getting to the back of this Bolt position involves progressively removing my interior which I could do but are reluctant. Here's the ![]() Do you agree (Rivnut Route over an alternative) Have I missed something (very possible as this is new territory for me) What actually should be on the other end of this bolt (within the bulkhead) Has this happened to anyone else (if so what did you do) Your help would be appreciated... ![]() Thanks SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

if you undo both bolts and swing hinge round out of the way , im sure the internal nut is in a captive cage and is just slotted in from the outside , you don't need to take anything off inside

munch90 and mikeh501
![]() Thanks... got it (the advice not the lost nut). ![]() Click image to enlarge Something like this then (not the correct size but type). The Rivnut idea is now out, if your right (and I'm not doubting it) I will find a square hole when I get there, so I will try to find the original, fish it out and refit it, or replace it if lost. My 90 has been Dinitroled, but it's a good point you make mikeh501. Thanks for the quick advice... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

thats the sort of thing
think there is three holes in the bulkhead under the hinge ,two bolt holes think there square and one bigger square hole in the centre where the nuts slide up in when you fit the bolts back in cover the threads in waxoyl or something (or just dip the whole bolt in it ) |

Yep, square hole in the bulkhead if I remember rightly! (It's been about 2 years since I fitted new hinges!) so a captive nut in the square bracket is what's needed

Mine looked like this. The fixing is more a captive clip than a nut. Got a full set off ebay, just had to find the part number.
The fixing slips over the round holes using the square middle hole as you push it onto the panel. Easy to drop them when fitting as they need a firm shove. ![]() Click image to enlarge[/img] |

Yep, square captive nuts that slide / clip into place. Keep the door shut, undo remaining hinge bolt, clip in new captive nut, swing hinge back into place, apply copperslip to bolt threads before refitting and tightening. Easy peasey.
Always worth keeping a few spare captive nuts if you intend to make habit of mucking about with the hinge to bulkhead bots ![]() Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Thought I would tackle this, so got the tools out ...
![]() Click image to enlarge Nothing (apparent) at the base of the lower hinge channel... ![]() Click image to enlarge The top hinge then revealed 1/2 a retaining nut with the 'sprung' cage fractured... ![]() Click image to enlarge Off to Land Rover for a replacement, Thanks for your help with this... If they won't stay in place perhaps clean it all up and use a spot of superglue.

I did exactly the same thing when I was replacing the bolts for stainless. Got one of those magnets on the end of an aerial things - possibly the best £8 I've ever spent. As I progressed, I got used to leaving the magnet up against the rivnut (and bolts) and never lost another one. Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

Thanks dorsetsmith I will probably drop in to a Land Rover as I am passing my local dealer tomorrow, and I should get out without the need to sit down in reception have a 'free' coffee and recover from their parts pricing policy on this one. I wasn't expecting the cage / clip to break as it has, some kind of spring steel, which has not been repeatedly disturbed and so work harden and fracture... but there you go.
