I will probably drop in to a Land Rover as I am passing my local dealer tomorrow, and I should get out without the need to sit down in reception have a 'free' coffee and recover from their parts pricing policy on this one.

How wrong I was...

Hello All… and hopefully Land Rover too,

Let me explain, I set out to get a replacement M8 captive Door Nut… Simple Question

Called Land Rover to check they had one of these in stock… they didn’t,
but the usual helpful observation that if ordered before 3.00pm I can pick it up tomorrow, so OK. Thumbs Up

The conversation continued like this…

Customer: ‘Can I check the price please’?
Land Rover: ‘Yes sir’…Part No. LRO 55527…£3.80 + Vat £4.56
Customer: Can I check how many I get in the bag?
Land Rover: Oh that’s each sir…
Customer: Shocked
Land Rover: They used to be £0.74 and went up to £1.23 + Vat / £ 1.48 with a Part No. of BYH500100
but have now been replaced / upgrade, with a new Part No and new Price…yes checked again £4.56 inc Vat.

I do have 3 of the older ones at £1.48 inc Vat if you would like them?

Customer: Thanks (somewhat stunned) I’ll call you back.

Checked with Safari Engineering, £0.20p including VAT / New OEM Part / NOT Factored.
(good guess mikeh501)

I phoned Land Rover back (normally don’t do this) and spoke to the Parts Manager and explained…

Non-Customer: ‘I know you probably know this, but this kind of Pricing Policy just turns customers away from Land Rover and generally places them on the defensive, as they feel there’s a fair chance that they are about to get ripped off when approaching the Parts Department.

I can’t purchase my door hinge nut from Land Rover at that level of mark up, continuing that an independent would get my business, at over 20 times the price, it was clear, Land Rover doesn’t really want my business.

I also said that I would post this to help others. I know it’s only a small part, off one of your vehicles, but if it’s indicative of your approach, it underlines for me that when I have a maintenance issue with my Defender, I would be better served to think of independents first and Land Rover as a reluctant last resort.

I thought I would call back and let you know this ‘customers’ feedback.

‘Thank you sir (very polite), I know that Land Rover polices the internet forums… so you never know’.

I bought 5 new type OEM M8 Door Nuts (now with a formed threaded section within a single piece item) for £1.00 inc Vat, instead of paying £22.80 from Land Rover.

I’m used to obtaining OEM parts for typically 30% less than Land Rover and on occasions far more, or even going down an improved specification route (brake pads for example) for less than the standard LR direct replacements, but this is the greatest price differential I have come across. I know it’s only a small part, but come on Land Rover Exclamation SKIP

Unsuprised tbh. Dealers are rob dogs at the best of times. I've taken to finding the part number on the PDF manual I downloaded and then typing the part number into eBay which normally returns a few sellers.done this with various bits.
