They don't fail catastrophically.
They'll just leak to the point where the seal fails and oil is sprayed around quite a bit. If it isn't obvious (oil on the under side of the bonnet and around the pump itself) then don't bother taking it in - they'll need to be able to confirm the fault before replacing it. Sounds like yours is on the way out - they'll probably be able to diagnose it pretty soon. Make sure the latest part is fitted as a replacement (I doubt there are many of the older ones kicking about now anyway). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Or spray some old oil all over the pump area... worked for me!! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I thought of doing that before mine failed then it obliged and did it for me One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |
