Brake vacuum pump leak?

Hi all...

I noticed an oil patch on one of the hoses coming from the brake vacuum pump shortly after I bought my Defender, however it was where it made contact with another pipe... it didn't seem to be coming directly from the pump itself. I didn't see any of the other tell-tale signs of pump failure, like spray on the bonnet, and the truck was running fine.

When I brought it in for it's first service, I figured that the garage would tell me if anything were amiss, as they did spot that the rear diff seal was bad. They didn't say anything about it, and to be honest it slipped my mind to bring it up.

Since I've had the truck back from the garage however, it seems like a bit more oil has leaked out, and I've seen a few drops on the underside bonnet.

How quickly do these pumps fail when they do eventually go? I've got a big trip coming up, I can call LR assist but at the same time I don't enjoy the prospect of slamming on the brakes and having an issue!

get them to fit the latest pump which has a double seal 2.4 90 XS

They don't fail catastrophically.

They'll just leak to the point where the seal fails and oil is sprayed around quite a bit. If it isn't obvious (oil on the under side of the bonnet and around the pump itself) then don't bother taking it in - they'll need to be able to confirm the fault before replacing it.

Sounds like yours is on the way out - they'll probably be able to diagnose it pretty soon. Make sure the latest part is fitted as a replacement (I doubt there are many of the older ones kicking about now anyway). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Or spray some old oil all over the pump area... worked for me!! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I thought of doing that before mine failed

then it obliged and did it for me

One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition
