Mine is a 2.2 but I only want the UltraGauge in the middle If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Nice work Mark, that's an impressive set-up you've got there. - Andrew -

With a bit of careful craftsmanship and luck (based on light guides being the same distance apart) I think it might be possible to relocate the DPF LEDs to the area under the rev counter. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

As an update for anyone who is interested in this modification:

A forum user is sending me a spare cluster to fit both a Check Temp and an Ultragauge. The modified centre support of the cluster with the 2 gauges will then be sent back so the original cluster can be clipped apart to replace the centre support with the modified one.
I'll be doing the CheckTemp a bit different to how it is shown in my blog to make it a tidier and more robust installation. The electronics will be embedded in the cluster, rather than sitting behind it.
The downside to this is that I will have to remove the relay that can switch the A/C on and off.

This isn't going to happen over night, but I'll update this thread with the progress.

Cheers,

Mark http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

Hello from germany!
I'm trying to implement something similar. But I don't want to use something like the UltraGauge, i want to use a microcontroller and control a lcd myself.
Yesterday I tryed to disassemble the cluster and check the place I have to position the lcd. But I failed at the needles. Can you tell me, how to remove them? I tryed to pull them off, but it didn't work...
Or was I just too afraid to damage something?

Hi Daxmus,

You should squeeze and twist the needle anticlockwise while pulling the needle away from the dials.
They are just held on with friction.

I look forward to seeing your project. What sort of information do you want to display on the LCD?

Cheers,

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your reply! Hopefully i can try it within the next days.

I want to use the ELM327 chip, which is a quite common OBD2 interpreter, to communicate with the car. Probably the UltraGauge uses the same chip, so i should be able to display the same information.
But the differences are, that i can choose the color of the lcd myself, the design of the screens, icons, ...
Displaying data from external sensors should also be possible (oil temperature, exhaust temperature, ...). It would be easier, faster and cheaper to use a UltraGauge, but for quite some time i want to develop a sophisticated microcontroller project. Thatsway i do it on myself.

That sounds like a big project daxmus, good luck with it. I hope you will share the results Smile
I agree it is better to do things yourself as you don't have to compromise your design for others. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

I've lined up the DPF lights with unused light guides in the rev counter, so for 2.2 owners who want the Ultragauge fitted, this could be a good solution Smile

Wouldn't the place of the Dark Display make a perfect location for a disassembled Apple Watch? Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Yes, it will be a very big project...
But i will keep you informed!

My roadmap is:
- check how to fit the display (thanks to mark for the hint with the needles Smile
- think about the menu-structure and design of particular menu pages (what information should be displayed)
- think about the count of the needed switches to control all
- create the circuit layout
- build the curcuit and stasrt writing code
- test, test, test,...
- install it in the car and be happy Smile

I guess it will take time at least till next spring, because i can spend only a few hours per week on the project.
