I've found this thread hugely inspirational since you first started it and in that time I've bought and sold a Series III because what I really wanted was a Series II like yours and I was lucky to buy one from a fellow forum user who had done all the hard (and skilful) work just like you.
I wish I had your skills and a big thank you to awakening the Series 'want' that I had been suppressing PS - value wise, upwards of £10k for insurance imho |

You have done a wonderfully sympathetic job on this build Miles, really impressive with awesome attention to detail... As I have said before, I have neither the facilities, let alone the skill sets, to accomplish something like this, but I would dearly love to own one that has been refurbished to such an all round excellent level as yours... To satisfy my curiosity, I have obtained a valuation from Julian Shoolheifer at classiccarvaluations.co.uk. The valuation document is mostly based on the information I provided via the online form concerning the restoration work carried out, history and originality of the vehicle with supporting photos. There are however some interesting comments about the valuation itself. It points out that the valuation is based upon the amount expected to be paid for a replacement vehicle assuming purchase from a private seller, auction or specialist dealer taking account that it may be necessary to purchase a vehicle of lesser condition and incur some restoration costs. About the Series 2 in general, it states that Series 2 Land Rovers are climbing in value at a faster rate than Series Ones whose market has arguably been established. There is a common misconception that Land Rovers are cheap and easy to restore and this is simply not the case. In summary about the vehicle, the Land Rover seems to be a lovely combination of sympathetically restored components and originality. The original finish, where it could be kept, has been kept, and good efforts have been made to blend old with new. The Land Rover could only really be bettered if it were reunited with its original registration and perhaps some more attention to the blending and matching of the old and new paint. Good Series 2s with excellent rebuilt underpinnings are surprisingly hard to find and the condition and history of this one would be much favoured in the market today. What do you reckon then? A: £5,500 B: £8,000 C: £10,500 D: £13,000 E: £15,000 |

I'm not surprised.
You've done a brilliant job on your 2a and done all the 'right' things in my opinion - better than money in the bank ! |

What a brilliant thread and a fantastic restoration. Well done Miles! I would love a Series but haven't the funds. Fortunately my love of Land Rovers is addictive, which is why my Dad had a beautiful 2 1/4 petrol, 88", 59 S2 delivered today!!!

Can't remember the last time I rebuilt a carburettor. Very satisfying!

Work has stopped play for the last few weeks, but I now have some time on my hands again and will see if I can't get the last few jobs ticked off and my battered old truck MOT'd before the end of the year.
Nice and sunny here today - a good excuse to get it out of the garage and stand and look a little! I was reminded of this vehicle when I was mucking about with my series III project last weekend. My mate was over to get the freewheeling hubs off, and he mentioned about giving it a polish...so we got some green t-cut and had a go, it made quite a difference!
See the bit of unfaded paint which was hidden under a warning plate - Click image to enlarge The rest now matches. Click image to enlarge Obviously it will get new doortops in the future. We had a go with the front end too, you can see the difference if you look at the bonnet. A few more jobs ticked off and nearer to being MOT'd and on the road. I wired up the wiper motor and Smiths Heater, reusing the old aux panel with rheostat:
Click image to enlarge With the wiper working, I re-installed the original Lucas Screen Spray: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And injected just over three cans of Dynax S-50 into the chassis, door pillars, door frames and even managed to get some into the top of the bulkhead through the top windscreen clasp bolts and the little hole above where the screenwash hose passes though. One further can was used in some of the nooks and crannies around the chassis, like the undersides of the rear tub outriggers and the corners of the footwells: Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |
