Advise on steering box adjustment
Hi All,

My 2.2 110 has suffered from a lot of steering play. The steering wheel turns excessively before the road wheels do anything. This makes for a vague driving experience and I am fed up with it. I am used to Defender steering having owned TD5 and 300tdi in the past and I had no problem with these.

I thought I would be able to adjust the play out of the steering by moving the nut on top of the steering box, I seem to remember it was accessable with previous defenders.

Anyway with the 2.2 the air filter box and intercooler pipe are directly over the top of the steering box adjuster, I have tried to remove the air filter box but am afraid if I force it I may break it. Any tips on doing this, am I going about it the right way.

It has been back to the dealer with this problem and I got the usual bxllshxt "its all within tolerance sir".

Thanks in advance.

Is the nut working loose on the drop arm of the steering box? I had that with mine so re-tightened it and added another nut and tightened against the first.

Check the steering shaft universal joints too as these commonly cause play in the steering.

Steering box adj should be last thing to consider. All tre's are tight? Drop arm ball joint ok and as above drop arm bolt tight? Plus steering ujs are fitted fight and tight Cheers
