I currently have a Mantec Plastic Jobby fitted on my Defender TD5 which is great for wading in water, but horrendous when driving on the road in the pouring rain. It seems to suck up water within the top vortex and soak the air filter in the airbox, creating a loss of power and a very wet filter.
I tried to speak with Mantec about this issue but sadly never heard anything back. So my question is: Whats the best Snorkel apart from the plastic jobby? |

The older type safari snorkel with the moulded spigot that goes through the wing.

There have been many posts about it doing this. It just can't separate water from air in really bad weather. Caused me a few problems over the years.

Totally agree just wrote a post on this,
I have the modern looking. Mantec Plastic one, Every time I'm over 60mph in rain or mist air filter gets wet, then power loss mike spluttering, pull over air filter swap and it's fine but I then have to go slow. I've come up with a solution for mine and as soon as I finish the next three weeks of mad business at work, it's going in the wheelie bin after 18 months, loss of power generally, wet air filters 15 plus Im ready to bin it.. My advice is don't bother with one and if you do try something other than the Mantec modern plastic one, it's properly useless in rain and spray. I did get a conversation from Mantec, they said go slower to reduce air coming in - yea thanks for that I also spoke to BAS performance who said don't fit in the first place! have to say good good advice, can't wait to get the damn thing off! breath freely! go like the wind again and not have to change air filters when it rains. There's also the distinction between a snorkel and a raised air intake to consider ... Searching with google brings up lots and lots of info.

Its good to hear thats not only me that suffers with this issue. I have written to Mantec several times and never got anything back from them. Even when I spoke to MUD at the Land Rover show they denied this issue. Any way i think i will follow suit by throwing it away and replacing it with the Safari snorkel.

The WOLF setup was the best with two intakes one on each wing so it would suck air through the one that wasn't in the water! it also ensures good airflow twice the vent space to suck the air in
 . Go knows why a manufacturer hasn't simply copied it, made it look nicer KBX style for e.g. and sold as an upgrade, better airflow, looks good, wading capability for the average off roader, it's an ideal solution offering protection for the engine too without denting performance.
Having had a snorkel , unless I was driving through very deep water twice a month I wouldn't ever fit one again, load of rubbish for everyday use and actually the Mantec one could damage the engine. Very disappointed the thing that is supposed to keep the water out of the engine is actually the only thing to ever introduce water to my intake.... If anybody fits another type and has no problems, let me know but for now I am a snorkel hater.... Defender TD5 110 DC (Silver)
