The older the car and the lower the value the more likely any "incident" whatever that may be will cause a cat C or D rating to be given to it. The rating just means the insurance company classes it as cost inefficient to repair as they have to use reputable places to complete the work. At £100 an hour in labour that quickly writes off vehicles with any major damage in the lower price bracket. Even a small thing which is easy to repair using pattern parts might write off a low value car.
Whether its worth buying is entirely dependent on the reason for the rating. A cat D defender may well be a good buy. You can assess it easily and if you're game to rechassis then maybe that's a good call. A Cat D Astra with panel or frame damage is harder... The hard bit is getting enough info on it and its history including the repair work done to validate whether its a good thing to do. Personal opinion is its not worth the often only slight saving over a non insurance rated car. But that's a personal opinion. Sure there will be others out there with different views. |

A friend just bought a 96 300tdi 90 (N reg) that was a cat D because the wing had been crumpled but no chassis damage, and had been repaired (although could probably do with a better wing) £2900, it must be the bargain of the year. Chassis and rest of it is solid
Not sure about a conventional car though, really depends upon what the damage was and how much cheaper it was. Remember it can limit the amount of insurers that will take it on. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6 1994 Def 90 300tdi |

A bit like Trigger's broom by the look of it...
Same vehicle, but different doors, wing, hard top, wheels... you probably get the picture! Looks better in use now. |
