Pipes everywhere!

The government-run ones (GPSS) are due to be sold off I think and privatised, which would see the end of the Oil and Pipelines Agency.

There is a huge one that runs through the top of Tonbridge and Hildenborough which very recently got replaced with a larger bore pipe which carries aviation fuel for I believe Gatwick and was built as part of PLUTO.

I got some work on it putting up and taking down the fencing which protected the work site which was fantastic!

This one in particular is flown over twice a day by a Chinook to make sure nobody is tampering with it. A few years back I was visiting a friends house who lives near it (it goes through his field and he subsequently was the one that told me about the job) and we watched as the local fencing contractors who were fencing in the neighbouring field built an enormous bonfire on top of where the pipeline went.

In there defence, if you didn't know there was a pipeline there, you wouldn't it was just a field with 2 odd looking stiles at each end. We dutifully wandered over and told them and they fobbed us off saying it would be too deep to be effected and its here now and were not moving it. So we went back to my friends house and watched proceedings.

The fire was lit and started fast, just in time for the daily chopper pass. The chopper circled once then landed in the field next to it and out popped a few army blokes much to the surprise of the now very sheepish looking fencing concentrators. Within 5 minutes there were 2 fire engines and 4 police cars who doused the flames and got out a notebook and had a long chat with the contractors.

I find it hard to believe that they had been stealing fuel that long without anyone noticing.

If you're in the industry, you hear about this happening all day long, but generally on a smaller scale. People have been tapping into the Fawley lines for years and years, and it'll still happen in the future! There was a case about 6 months ago where two blokes tapped into one of the Fawley lines going directly to Birmingham airport.

However, there's always somebody on the inside who knows what is being piped through each line, and passes this info on. There's no point in tapping into a random line only to fine it's carrying JET A-1 when you want DERV. Bit of a waste of time?

Also, the fact that a supposed '6.3 million litres' have been stolen has been hugely blown up by the press! -So don't believe everything they tell you! Whistle An engine to TDi for!
