Most likely to be the crown-pinion out of spec. Yours is a 2010?

It is a full day job for a well trained person. A couple of days if nothing is severely worn out. Puma 110" SW

Yep exact same model and year, my diff is definately noisy in overun. Mate have i had dramas with mine. 5 egr valves, a new engine, panels coming away from under passengers seat, front diff burnt oil, you name it mine has done it. Not happy any more with it, my first brand new car ... did have a 98 110 defender that was brilliant.. go figure... Your not alone. Puma Growls At Me Constantly

note that LR changed the teeth design on the C&R of the back diff, make sure you get the latest
pics here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13545.html If drivetrain backlash becomes an issue suspect diff also, found them to be the main cause of it (not R&P) 2 cents I you have identical sound on acceleration, check wheelbearings first, R&P tend to make more sound on overrun (or none under acceleration) |

Well took her in today, they are replacing both diffs, and both rear axles... Hmmm they said that the latest design is going in and shouldn't be a prob any more. Thaey also tell me that they have had a few with this issue, what exactly goes wrong is a mystery, but there is not much to a diff anyways. I am a diesel mech by trade and i personally tink that the carrier flexs ever so slightly and results in pinion to crown wheel tooth contact change which will cause excessive whine in overun and in some casses under load. It is quite simple to fix and if you want dead quiet running, have the crownwheel and pinion lapped by a machine shop.. But hey if its still under warranty let someone else do it ... Ummm already done that at 3000 klms, the front of the g/box fell to bits and took out the clutch etc. I would put my foot on the clutch and it would bang away. ... Sorry forgot to mention that in my firts post.. Puma Growls At Me Constantly

Dealers will only change the diff now, ie swap it for a complete new (or more likely reconditioned) unit. There appear to be some issues with diff build quality from LR, and the ideal solution would be to set the diff up properly rather than simply replace one bad diff with another.
Setting up a diff is not difficult but is not a job for the faint-hearted; there are several other threads on the subject. Swapping a diff out is a quick job (you can do it in less than an hour for the rear, perhaps three for the front), stripping and adjusting one takes longer depending on skill, parts and experience. |
