As long as you don't try racing changes from cold then no it shouldn't crunch. Ask them to let you test drive another vehicle or two to prove that they all do it. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I find when the engine etc is cold, any hurried gear change has a slight crunch to it. I've quickly learned to drive round the problem.
Agree that if you're not happy, a trip to dealer is in order - there may be something wrong/out of adjustment |

I am doing a very slow gear change when cold, but this is more of grinding, like as if the synchromesh has failed on 5th and 6th.

It is common - more do it than don't.
Mine does. |

It's a primitive truck and the gearchange would never win any awards for refinement.
So the issue you are trying to determine is ............ is it 'normal' for a Defender or is it goosed? I drove another 2014 model the other day and I must say the gearbox on it felt a lot less clunky than my own. |

Mine crunches from 2nd to 3rd at the first change, this was covered in another thread and the advice was to double de-clutch. This works for me.

I do as others said now, don't hurry it while engine is cold from first to second and it's fine. I also pause for like a split second when going through neutral and it seems to change pretty fine most of the time. A little slack as props joints take up drive as you let out the clutch but again by smooth driving it's not an issue. 110 Hardtop

5-6 sounds unusual , as other have said it will never be a racing change, mine is nursed 1-2 but fine in all other changes, best bet is (as others have said) go to dealers ask to drive another one you can then be sure if yours is different.
good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Many thanks for your responses. I do feel I need to try another one to put my mind at rest, I am doing very slow gear changes especially when the car is cold. It seems like the synchromesh has failed on 5th, possibly caused by the engine hanging revs between 4th and 5th only?

My 2010 suffered from horrible back lash problems but never any gear crunching. Stealer did well on the back lash and now it drives quite well........for a Deafener that is.
AlanH. PS. But it has had a new transfer box in for the last 12K as the original had a noise like bagpipes coming from it. Don't get me wrong I love the pipes, but not from my gear boxes. |
