Some scary moments on The ITV programme earlier, people seem to loose the plot very quickly when it comes to the roads

I take it you saw the same programme too. I find it silly and laughable at the same time.
I never squabble with others whatever they do, intake it on the chin. Trouble is if you don't these days you've got to be careful a knife isn't drawn on you, all sorts out there. |

I used to operate some large farm machinery over the years and the most amusing incident was one exremely wet summer in the 80's when I was combining. With the field conditions being absolutely atrocious we had fitted my combine with a set of Terra Tyres. These were some extremely expensive(they were rather sort after that year, second hand back then cost us over 5 grand) plus they were very wide, the drive axle tyres were over 4' wide each tyre and it made my combine a shade over 14' wide to take on the road. Our farms were spread around south Warwickshire and by late summer I had covered around 2000acres. I had finished all I could in one area and I was needed to travel up to more ground north of Stratford trouble was that the police didn't want us to move on the Sunday afternoon, even though we had dispensation letters we still had to inform traffic police when we were on the move, out in the sticks they just let us move with our own escort vehicle but as we had to go through Stratford they told us when.
The police wanted me to be ready to cross the bridge over the river at 7am Monday morning so at 6am we left Shipston on Stour and headed north, as we got to Stratford we had quite a following as we got to the built up bit, the police had left me a space so we could clear most of them past when I had got to the bridge. The time came, my escort was sent across, traffic stopped and I was waved forward. As I got onto the bridge I could see that a car had dodged round the police car that was at the end of the one way system leading to the bridge, it drove around my escort Land Rover nearly knocking the lad over who was trying to stop her and promptly came to a stop in front of me flashing her lights, blowing the horn and what looked like shouting out of the window. Seeing that I was just over 14' wide, Clopton Bridge just allows two lorries to pass on the bridge therefore it won't be much wider than 18' then there won't be a lot of room to walk past comfortably let alone get a car past! Behind me was half of the cars in Warwickshire, in front, one apopleptic woman who wasn't doing her blood pressure much good. All that I could do was drop the engine down to tick over and wait. The look on her face was a picture as she realised that I was actually pouring a drink out of my flask and had got my sandwich box out! It did take a couple of minutes for the copper who had walked down the road to have a word with her to actually get through to her that she was in the wrong and would need to reverse. Give him his due he did get her to get out and sit in the passenger seat as it was painfully obvious that we were going nowhere fast in reverse! He reversed and pulled out of the way and the last I saw was him licking his pencil and a fresh page open in his note book! I know this has been a long winded account but it was so funny and had taken about 20 minutes but the gridlock it caused was huge, for those that know the area will know how quickly traffic builds up, I'm sure that there was a whole load of potential road rage that morning |

I have had my fair share of idiots but every time I get out of which ever car I have been driving and go and loom over said numpty they seem to turn back into mice. Very funny to see. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Road rage is becoming very bad in Aus too.
But sometimes for the perpetrators. I have a friend, who is quite big, quite fit, and he can look after himself, He does not suffer fools gladly. Anyway, he's driving along & He must've upset someone, because the other driver gets out of his car, harrassing my friend, & telling him to get out of his car. My friend says, "Mate, You really don't want me to get out of my car". But the guy gets more & more abusive, so my friend says, "OK, but not on the main road, first on the left & I'll get out there". No worries, so my friend gets out of the car, the other guy gets hammered, ends up with two broken ribs, and my friend ends up taking a year to beat an assault charge,..which he did. Not a good result for anyone, but there are some real loonies on the roads here, so much so that many drivers are installing cameras in their cars to record any incident in which they may become involved. But the courts are weak too. There was one famous incident which made it onto the TV News where this guy attacked a car with an axe, tried to get to the driver, who "just" managed to drive off & escape, but it was all filmed. The perpetrator was caught, & all he got was a bond. The judge said he was on drugs at the time,he was turning his life around and jail was not the place for him? Pickles. |

JWL - I had a similar incident when driving large International 4WD with 10t grain trailer up a narrow lane in Cornwall. I was going up hill (therefore had right of way) when a coach full of tourists comes down the hill, see me and keeps going totally ignoring a passing place on his side of the road.
So we end up bumper to bumper, I pull out the flask and sandwiches and eventually he gives in and reverses when I refused to as I had no visibility behind (good job too as there were probably 200 angry drivers stuck behind me!). Actually that reminds me of another occasion when I had to drive a pea viner from Micheldever to the other side of Basingstoke on a Friday evening at rush hour... |

As above, the ever increasing frequency of 'Road Rage' is exactly why there's cameras fitted in the D4. Blackvue, and although not cheap, very good. An engine to TDi for!

Hello custom90steve...
Well you have started something here... I am sure we all have encountered the odd bit of irrational behavior from time to time resulting all too often it would seem with some choice language and some uncalled for hand gestures...as time goes by I have moved progressively from to as you just don't know what you may be dealing with I have one 'short' story that was 'perfect' in its outcome. 10 years ago our family was returning from a day out at the coast in our 300tdi 90, we were 3 miles from home, where the roads are narrow and undulating with little or no safe places to overtake, hedgerows everywhere with the occasional pull in areas, which are used often, particularly when the farm equipment is in full service locally. We had started the 2-3 mile twisted climb up to our village, when a subaru impreza with an energetic youth quickly joined us at the rear, my two girls then 7 & 4 pointed out 'how keen he looked' and 'why is he weaving about like that daddy?', my wife gave me that look that said... just stay calm...we have all had a nice day...lets get home safely... Anyway we rounded a corner and a relative 'straight' appeared, 'impreza boy' had clocked it and unbelievably he started his maneuver...now having driven Land Rovers for essentially all my life after getting a few quick sports cars out my system, in my youth, I am very use to the tell-tail signs of some one assuming you are going to be too slow just because your driving what your driving; but because you can see so much more in a Defender together with its flat sided shape, I feel I press on well enough around these kind of roads. I gave 'impreza boy' as much room as I could' conscious of just how close I was moving to the edge of the un-curbed road with that all inviting ditch that claims its victims during flooding and winter snow... 'impreza boy' passed and tucked in directly in front of us and to complete his performance we got a casual wave out of his window which he finished by then holding the front pillar, taking the now fast approaching right hand bend single handed. Now you may well have finished this story all by your self... but all I can do is describe what probably happened next as we didn't actually see it, just the final result as we rounded the corner. This is a of a corner as it is off camber and tightens progressively it also climbs and dips at one point right in its center unloading a car or motorbike if taken at speed. Get off the tarmac and any one of 1/2 a dozen unforgiving oak trees will stop you dead. 'Impreza boy', last seen going into this accelerating and one handed had misjudged things badly, lost control gone up a bank, clipped an oak tree, his complete front bumper was lodged tightly in the thick ivy roots around the tree, his car had then rolled right over and was back on all 4 wheels front windscreen laying on his bonnet. He was also pointing back towards us, looking somewhat shaken but unhurt. My wife wound down her window to check further his condition as we crawled past, (she was doing all she could not to give him her 'it deserves you right you idiot' speech) he almost could't bring himself to look at us or offer anything coherent back... as we drove away my eldest daughter said... he doesn't look very impressed I couldn't help myself So we now have 'not impressed' corner as a local landmark for us. Not funny at the time but..........
I'm waiting for an old dear to back out of a space at an Asda carpark. I'm in one of the first coiler 110 HCPU A reg, no power steering, N/A diesel, but the love of my life. The old biddy waves me in and knowing it's going to take a few goes to get in, I wave her past. I start to get in the tight space and some tosser shoots in. Now we are half n' half and he wont budge and just squeezes past me, locks his car and legs it. I have abandoned the LR and screaming at his back that rope is going under the effin' car and it's getting dragged out. Off he walked..... Parked elsewhere and marched off to the Post Office, in the zig zag queue, it's only knob jockey coming the opposite way, each time we past, I was snarling "Wait till we get outside plums"....He's out before me, but I'm on a mission behind him... I abuse the life out of him all the way back to the carpark and walking up to his car, parked in MY space, the tirade increases. He walks past the offending motor and gets into a little red Fiesta about five cars down and drives off...... I stood there for a while, embarrassed thinking I really do need to get a grip....(I was alot younger by the way) |
