Best Cage protection - options?
Hi all,
I want to get some additional roll over protection. (not that I plan to need it!)

Want the aesthetics of an SVX style front hoop but not just a cosmetic one.. then what can I do for the rear? that would also allow me the flexibility to still make it a soft top later on should I wish..

Any ideas on types and who where to get it fitted in the South?

I have the Performance + Protection SVX style cage on my soft top 90.

It fits down to the chassis in six places.

I wouldn't say it was up to a serious, high speed roll over but would (hopefully) hold up in a gentle roll.

Probably best to have a chat with P + P because I'm sure they could supply two different sets of tubes where the outer and inner meet that would be suitable for a hardtop initially and then swap over when going to a soft top.

The other problem with their 'standard' SVX set up is that the rear cage sits on the cappings which would foul the hard top - so you'd need something bespoke.

Installation wise, Gumtrees have a good reputation as do Foleys

the original NAS softtop sounds like it would fit the bill. Safety Devices made them originally.
i understand the company was resurected a couple of years ago and all the original designs are obtainable

Looks like the same design as the P+P one - same problem with not being able to fit a hard top.

One 'tip', I was told that the soft top is really noisy flapping against the diagonals behind front seats that go back on the capping (I believe these are optional)

Zip tying pipe lagging to the all the cage tubes tightens up the canvas fit and stops the flapping Thumbs Up

Hi,

We have just had the Safety Device L148 cage fitted, which protects the passenger cell with an external (A pillar) and internal (B & C pillar). Really pleased - not too intrusive and expertly fitted by Foley's.

Yes, it did remind me a little of those mine protection vehicles but this concept is completely different if you watch the videos and the ability for individual to survive if the cage rolls over you.

I'm also thinking that there must be a significant weight advantage over a steel cage.

I was surprised by the mounting to the quad itself and had imagined that this would be the real weak point of this design - but it appears to work very well.

Out of interest, how do you define "best"? I don't know what kind of specs are quoted for cages (have been thinking about one as the landy's our family car). Is it quoted in terms of accident at speed X, or of type Y, or survives an Elk test at 50MPH? 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Not sure there is a definition of best but the minimum standards laid down for motorsport are a good starting point. These can be accessed easily from here:

then it's just a case of how far you want to go, as an example door bars will provide extra protection but do you want the hassle of climbing over them everytime you get in and out.

If what you are looking at is non-compliant then understand what the non-compliance is and how this affects the protection you are looking for.

Seen a few supposedly substantial cages that were let down with basic design or installation flaws that would have seriously compromised them in a roll over.
