That does look bad Shocked

Have you pulled the red plug and looked inside, probably oil everywhere ?

First off you need a new injector harness, Alive (site sponsor) or BAS (site sponsor) will be able to sort that, can't remember the cost but less than £100. Don't get an ebay special !!! Probably worth getting the cam cover gasket as well.

Change the harness, sounds bad but actually very easy, Alive have a guide I think.

Once new harness is in place unplug the red plug and clean with electrical contact cleaner, get it as clean as you can. Plug back in and drive for a couple of days.

Repeat the cleaning process until no more residual oil coming through the red plug, it may take weeks.

Don't expect immediate results, you have got to get the residual oil out of the main harness.

There's your problem, new harness is about £35ish took me about an hour to change when I did mine, should be loads of info on here about it, if you're not confident about doing it an Indy should only charge about an hours labour,

As previously stated remove red plug every few days or so and re-clean until it stops coming through. Did mine two years ago and been fine since. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Good guide here

http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=42788

I didn't disconnect the battery, not 100% sure why they did that ?

Make sure you get the correct harness and gasket for your engine, MY2002 onwards is a 15P engine and pre MY2002 is 10P engine.

That looks a bit like a s***part loom Shocked Give Pete at BAS a ring or Gary at Alive, either will sort you out with a quality item at a reasonable cost.

Let's put it this way, with the oil in the seat box there is a lot of oil seeping through the loom and it has probably been going on for a long time. The problem is with this issue is that it can leak oil down the loom for a long period without any symptoms and then suddenly you have a problem.

I changed my loom last year with an Alive loom but still check it every couple of months just in case.

If you were closer I would say drop round and I will change it for you but Lancashire is a bit of a drive from Somerset !

To put your mind at rest, this is a known issue with TD5's, Defenders and Disco's, so you are not alone !

If it's under warranty then get it back to the dealer. If the dealer sells Defenders I bet they cleaned the ECU plug to stop the immediate issue and hoped it would last out of warranty, stupid really as they were looking at less than £100 to sort it out. Non LR dealer would probably not be aware to the issue.

If the dealer sorts it for you insist on a quality loom. Not sure how they will sort the residual oil problem.

As an aside, I have a 2001 TD5 CSW and a 2013 90 CSW. Smiles per mile the TD5 wins hands down Thumbs Up

He was probably not aware of the issue then - maybe the person who sold it on did a bodge to make it run OK ?

Cotswolds is a bit of a drive for you to get the harness replaced and the residual problem sorted. If I were in your situation I think I would have a word with them and explain the problem and that you know the solution and then see what they have to say. If you drive down and have the harness replaced you are still faced with checking the plug every couple of days until the oil has cleared.

I am sure you can get it sorted with the dealer - if you have to drive back to the Cotswolds you may as well do the extra miles and come to Somerset and I will do it for you !

When it is running properly you will love it even more - there is nothing better than a TD5 when it is running well in my opinion Thumbs Up

I had the same issue you have, oil in the loom/red plug. I took the plunge and replaced it myself. Its not a hard job just take your time and work out where things go, the route of the cable etc.
If you do it, dont drop the little clips that hold the plug to the injectors.
Also, as mentioned worth getting a new rocker gasket as well.

As for the oil in the rest of the loom, there was'nt much I could do about it. so I left it. Cleaned the red plug every week or so until it stopped appearing 1999 Defender TD5 110
