active subwoffer.

Hello all,

I went off I,c,e ,/ car stereo shopping, for me being an old git.
After looking on the web and going around 3 or 4 shops I left more confused than when I went in.
I know the old kenwood is going to have to be replaced due to the cd changer skipping every time it sees a bump.

That's not a problem I quite like the idea of a dab head unit as I`am a fan of bbc 6 music, so I`am looking around at these. Does anyone know what the reception is like in Leicester / the midlands, I`ve had a loan freelander 2 for two weeks while sturgess fix the damage they caused to the cars body work, they still missed a bit but that's for another day.

I quite enjoyed the dab in the freelander I wondered are some better than others reception wise is there a spec I need to look for
On asking various companys in and around Leicester about the speaker options for the car I never knew the front ones would be such an issue they don`t recommend fitting them in the doors as theres to little space, so adaption to the dash is required.
Anyone know a good type that fit sound good and look as close to o,e as poss.

One company quoted me a scary price for hand made fibre glass door pods I wonder where my feet will go size 10 steel toe cap boots on everyday will soon finish them off.

Then came the idea of an active sub woffer ? I don`t know what one of them is I politely told said gent it`s not a saxo and I`am far from 17.
He then showed me a slab like thing made by a company called IN PHASE model number usw 12 / 10 for the small one,
not the big townie box thing I was expecting has anyone heard of these, it would be quite handy as its only a couple of inches wider than the centre cubby box which I`am told I could mount it to and it would lift the sound and bounce it off the bulkhead, ok fair enough I also saw a smaller kenwood one next to it in the display case which I was told was no good and could not match the in phase unit hmm not convinced on that one.
I quite liked the look of the kenwood as it is slightly smaller than the back of the cubby box so would be out of sight to prying eyes if you know what I mean.

All I want is something that will play zane low at night on radio 1 the now show on radio 4 followed by the stone roses and the smiths for those happy times .

Any advice would be nice. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

An Active Sub is a Subwoofer and Amplifier in one unit, often lower power but are compact and space saving. A passive set up is like mine (see gallery) which entails a separate Amp and Sub with a Sub mounted in a ported or sealed enclosure.
More room required for passive and can be more difficult set set up and wire. But much much more powerful.
For your use I'd recommend Active though for space saving and easier wiring.

The Kenwood version is good but not as good spec as above.

Kenwood 13cm speakers fit in the front where the originals are with a bit of dash trimming £50 - http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/kfc-e130p-speakers

So total set up for about £250

You could buy a £200 sub but Zane Lowe will still sound crap

2004 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Bonatti Grey

I fitted the Kicker hideaway, fantastic bit of kit.
Made a huge amount of difference in the sound.
Especially when standing still you can feel the bass.
Kicker has a little dial you can crank up for different songs.
Well worth the investment.

Land Rover supply the Alpine unit as an option when buying a new Defender and it fits nicely on the rear of a cubby

Tiger yours was the one I saw in the shop I liked the look of it , and it`s only £105.00 on line, the shop wanted 150.00 for the same unit nice mark up eh?
how does it sound I don`t want something to overpowering as mines pretty much a truck cab because of the larger bulkhead between the front and rear.

Steve, I read up on yours its got lots of good reviews on line and if I could justify the higher price to myself I would go for that one but as I`ve got to factor in the cost of a new radio to I think the kenwoods on my shopping list

It sounds good, I've nothing to compare it against but it works for me and I don't see the point of spending a fortune on ICE in a Landy as you're always fighting road/engine noise.

You can adjust the levels and phase so out's just right and to make sure your not tempted to take it down the local ASDA car park at 10pm for a dum dum dum dum dum dum soundoff with a 1.1 Saxo VTSXRSR

With the right power and sound proofing you can fight of the road / engine noise though.

Thanks guys I`ve got some sound proofing coming from a friend he does delivery`s to the jag plant and has a couple of damaged rolls in his warehouse for me.
I just have to remember to collect them before he throws them out, come to think of it I will see him tomorrow you have just reminded me hope he has`ent binned them, thanks again.

Forgot about the asda bit we can hear them at night near work doing the best to blow there windows out, whats wrong with a twin choke webber, a straight thru pipe and a tunnel to drive thru. Now that's what I call music.

What road noise

Personally steer clear of the In phase stuff..... not a fan, any of the afore mentioned active subs are good and will improve on the sound

has good reviews for a modest increase in base but is nice and small.

I'm just trying to figure out how to mount it - hopefully on the underside of the mid row seats or on the box section / floor underneath the mid seats.
