So yes another headlight issue, so I shall make this as short and precise as possible.
The vehicle is a 2002 110 CSW TD5 The issue here is that when I switch the headlights on, the sidelights work but that's it. Full beam only works with the large stalk when you pull it towards yourself in flashing mode. I have replaced the main switch but no luck with any headlights. I have checked the fuses, all of which are ok, also checked the wiring which all seems fine. I haven't checked the relays. I have read all the other posts but still not sure what it could be. Not sure where all the relays are for this issue. Your help would be greatly appreciated as I am off to Wales a week on Saturday an will be needing headlights. |

Yarp, new flasher/indicator switch assembly sorted the problem. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Ordered a new indicator full beam stalk - hopefully this will sort the issue out. Further more i have checked to relays under the dash and they seem to be working ok.
I will keep you updated. |

Indeed most probably faulty contacts in the indicator/headlight stalk. If you put in a new one, you should also do the headlight loom upgrade, otherwise it will happen again, sooner or later. Cheers, Vincent

Is it upgraded bulbs that destroy (or help destroy) the switches,or does it happen wi regular bulbs?. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

It happens with normal bulbs too. The cause is the bad design of the switch, copper contact in a piece of plastic. Because the current of all lights go through these contacts, they get hot and the plastic where they are seated melts. The contacts become loose and voîla ...
With the replacement loom only a small current needed to switch the relays go through the switch. Well that's exactly right. One of the oldest and well known issues with defenders for many years already has been the overloading of the headlamp 12V wiring, but this is easily managed, especially for the forewarned. One excellent/essential mod to reduce the issue is to simply install LED headlamps right from the beginning. Much less current and less heat on the entire loom all round this way. Before LEDs we would always take our brand new Defenders and rewire our headlights to separate relays without thinking twice about it. With LEDs this is not so important anymore. ****CENSORED**** |

Where would I find a new loom, as in which company is best - is there a part number i can use? |

The cause was a faulty main beam switch. It looked all good, but it was faulty so replaced with a new one, which is all very easy to do, except a nag to take the steering wheel off and on.
