2008 Puma. 93021kms (57800 miles)
There's been a rattle or knock on start up and idle for the last while. Recently this has gotten very loud and has developed into a loud "clakkety" noise while driving. The faster you go the faster the "clakkety" noise gets. It has always needed regular oil top ups. In the last 232 kms (144 miles) the oil on the dipstick has gone from the high mark to half way on the dipstick. There is no oil in the coolant and the oil light is not coming on while driving to indicate low oil pressure. There are no oil leaks. The vehicle is parked on white concrete and there are no oil marks underneath it.Hard to tell when driving if exhaust smoke is worse than usual but it does not seem excessively smokey. On the last MOT two years ago (due again soon) at 67,277 kms (41803 miles) the smoke reading came in at .750/m. Well within the limit but it seemed a little high to me at the time. The 1992 tdi came in at .150/m, a lot less than the Puma. It had been serviced one month prior to this by a maindealer and Castrol Edge engine oil was used. I am religious about oil changes and the quality and specification of the oil used. The vehicle has always driven very well and until the advent of this noise was exceptionally quiet. It seems to me that the oil use and slightly high smoke reading last MOT point to an underlying problem which has manifest itself with this constant annoying noise - loud knock on start up and clakking while driving. One local garage diagnosed crankshaft wear and said they could remove the engine, take out the crankshaft and have it reground then put everything back together for me. 57800 miles seems very low milage to warrant this type of work. I've been in contact with the maindealers who serviced her until recently to hear what their techs think. I supplied all of above information to the service manager to get his opinion and then decide whether he thinks they can sort it or not. There's another independent I have contacted but was non committal until he heard it in person, naturally enough. I added some Extralube ZX1 to the engine but it did not sort the "knocking" or the "clakkety" problem. Anyway I thought I'd throw it in here incase someone has any ideas. Needless to say that I'm pretty disappointed to have this problem considering the care that has been lavished on the vehicle. Somehow I think it will not be a cheap fix. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

After. Your numbers are 780,000 and something, whereas the issue was fixed after 767,162 (the numbers are allocated sequential as vehicles go down the line).
The first A of yours shows it is a 2010MY, the "9" in this place in the bulletin indicates 2009MY. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Please let me know how you get on with this. If the vehicle was under warranty the engine would be replaced free of charge, but I am not sure what LR's policy is once the warranty has expired. I know also LR considers the TSB closed, which suggests that no more claims will be honoured.
I too have an engine in this range, hence my interest. |

The "closed" thing means to me that the problem has been identified and finally sorted by these actions suggested in the bulletin. The out of warranty thing has been on my mind but I was not notified of this problem or of it's remedy in the warranty period. All being well, if they do decide on an engine change, where do they get a replacement 2.4 engine from?Maybe a 2.2 with the appropriate modifications to the ECU etc? Might just forward the info to customer services at Land Rover and see what comes out of it. Will keep you posted. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I am sure that 2.4 engines will be available through the supply chain for some considerable time, albeit they may be remanufactured.
I wish I shared your optimism about LR's open-mindedness! |

Just hoping for the best. I've e-mailed customer relations via this site. I was never notified that there was a problem or that there was a fix for it. Once again thank you for your help. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

They still fit 2.4's into Transit .. tis the same engine, so supply won't be an issue Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Car manufacturers are obliged to keep spares for 10 years, wouldn't think so with LR sometimes. Good luck. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
