Engine worries
2008 Puma. 93021kms (57800 miles)
There's been a rattle or knock on start up and idle for the last while. Recently this has gotten very loud and has developed into a loud "clakkety" noise while driving. The faster you go the faster the "clakkety" noise gets.
It has always needed regular oil top ups. In the last 232 kms (144 miles) the oil on the dipstick has gone from the high mark to half way on the dipstick.
There is no oil in the coolant and the oil light is not coming on while driving to indicate low oil pressure. There are no oil leaks. The vehicle is parked on white concrete and there are no oil marks underneath it.Hard to tell when driving if exhaust smoke is worse than usual but it does not seem excessively smokey.
On the last MOT two years ago (due again soon) at 67,277 kms (41803 miles) the smoke reading came in at .750/m. Well within the limit but it seemed a little high to me at the time. The 1992 tdi came in at .150/m, a lot less than the Puma. It had been serviced one month prior to this by a maindealer and Castrol Edge engine oil was used. I am religious about oil changes and the quality and specification of the oil used.
The vehicle has always driven very well and until the advent of this noise was exceptionally quiet.
It seems to me that the oil use and slightly high smoke reading last MOT point to an underlying problem which has manifest itself with this constant annoying noise - loud knock on start up and clakking while driving.
One local garage diagnosed crankshaft wear and said they could remove the engine, take out the crankshaft and have it reground then put everything back together for me. 57800 miles seems very low milage to warrant this type of work. I've been in contact with the maindealers who serviced her until recently to hear what their techs think. I supplied all of above information to the service manager to get his opinion and then decide whether he thinks they can sort it or not. There's another independent I have contacted but was non committal until he heard it in person, naturally enough.
I added some Extralube ZX1 to the engine but it did not sort the "knocking" or the "clakkety" problem.
Anyway I thought I'd throw it in here incase someone has any ideas.
Needless to say that I'm pretty disappointed to have this problem considering the care that has been lavished on the vehicle. Sad Somehow I think it will not be a cheap fix. Sad Sad 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Have you checked the compression of your engine cylinders
Can be broken segment

The early TDCi engines (up to 2008) had a design 'feature' of the piston cooling oil jets which could result under high oil pressure conditions in the jets shutting off and not reopening until the engine was restarted under lower oil pressure conditions. This meant that under cold start conditions with thick oil the jets woudl shut off, and the results were heavy knocking, accelerated piston/bore wear, and other engine damage. There was a TSB issued in 2008 for this (text of TSB at foot of post below) but I suggest that you check your VIN and if it is pre- 9A767162 then check the engine number to see if it is pre- or post- serial # ELD00080707063602.

If it is an earlier engine then the mod has never been carried out and it is quite possible that you have suffered this problem and have as a result a damaged engine.

If you are suffering from accelerated oil consumption with no external or inter-system leaks I would strongly suspect damaged bores. This condition would allow the compression pressure to vlow past the rings, pressurise the crank case and blow oil out of the crankcase breather. If it was my truck, I would inspect the induction syustem for evidence of excessive oily gunge, and most importantly I'd carry out a compression test on all cylinders. Low compression pressures (even on one cylinder only) suggest a high probability of bore, piston, or ring damage, or possibly cylinder head or cylinder head gasket damage, and the head needs to come off to allow a more thorough examination.

Land Rover Service Bulletin SSM38792, 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Type: LD - Defender - All Years - Special Service Messages - Engine
Name / Part No: SSM38792
Info Type: Service Bulletins
Version No: 1
Date Uploaded: 21 Jul 2008
Models: LD - Defender
Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Last Modified: 21-JUL-2008 09:44
Category: Engine
Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

There is always something else to worry about...

Out of interest, and forgive my ignorance, but how do you tell if your vin number is post 9A767162? Mine starts with AA78xxxxx - is this before or after?

Cheers

Mike

After. Your numbers are 780,000 and something, whereas the issue was fixed after 767,162 (the numbers are allocated sequential as vehicles go down the line).

The first A of yours shows it is a 2010MY, the "9" in this place in the bulletin indicates 2009MY.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Blackwolf, thank you very much. My engine falls into this category. I have just phoned and e-mailed the maindealers. Service manager not on site but I'll be chasing this up. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Please let me know how you get on with this. If the vehicle was under warranty the engine would be replaced free of charge, but I am not sure what LR's policy is once the warranty has expired. I know also LR considers the TSB closed, which suggests that no more claims will be honoured.

I too have an engine in this range, hence my interest.

The "closed" thing means to me that the problem has been identified and finally sorted by these actions suggested in the bulletin. The out of warranty thing has been on my mind but I was not notified of this problem or of it's remedy in the warranty period. All being well, if they do decide on an engine change, where do they get a replacement 2.4 engine from?Maybe a 2.2 with the appropriate modifications to the ECU etc? Might just forward the info to customer services at Land Rover and see what comes out of it. Will keep you posted. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I am sure that 2.4 engines will be available through the supply chain for some considerable time, albeit they may be remanufactured.

I wish I shared your optimism about LR's open-mindedness!

Just hoping for the best. I've e-mailed customer relations via this site. I was never notified that there was a problem or that there was a fix for it. Thumbs Up Once again thank you for your help. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Car manufacturers are obliged to keep spares for 10 years, wouldn't think so with LR sometimes. Neutral Good luck. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
