2007 2.4tdci 110 with 100,000 miles
I know this has been covered under various topics, after several searches on here and looking around transit forums I've not quite narrowed down what the problem could be -
A month or two ago the injector clamp bolts lost their torque setting and backed off slightly, resulting in a loud knock at idle and right through the rev range, along with rough running, smoke and plenty of oil seepage up the injectors. The injectors were removed, cleaned off and new stretch bolts inserted to the correct torque- the loud audible knock reduced significantly and the idle smoothed out considerably too.
A week or two ago the MIL light came on, so I cleaned the sensor to the inlet manifold which helped with the idle and cleared the fault code (cant rember exactly what it was but when plugged into the code reader it pointed to the MIL). Pior to this I had been hearing the scratching sound while driving about town, and the idle could be very lumpy even while up to temperature, but this has since stopped, I think.
My problem is, now that I'm listening like I've never listened before I can hear a slight knock on start up from cold, at which point there is a slight rough idle - there is also a miss-fire when revving slowly at idle. The engine only has to run for 5 mins from cold for the roughness to go away and the idle is smooth. While driving there seems to be no issues with how it runs, although every now and then there is a slight draw-back / kangerooing when I ease off the accellerator in 5th or 6th on the motorway.
After all of the above the engine feels like it runs better while driving but the fuel consumption I'm sure has increased a little. Every now and then it will struggle to start but this seems to point in the direction of a lazy starter motor.
I'm wondering if this will be due to:
EGR failure / on its way out
Dirty inlet manifold
Poor fuel delivery
Hydraulic lifters
Damaged injector(s)
Injector re-learning required
Something else???
I want to avoid melting / cracking pistons, so thought I'd ask on here who has experienced any of the above and what they've done to rectify it. I'm thinking of starting with the EGR & inlet manifold cleaning, any other suggestions?
