Bloody turbo or something has gone again
Not much more to say really - got through 3 gaskets now (3rd one heavy duty).

Coming home, I filled up with diesel and as I pulled away from the pump - "Whooooosh", combined with tractor engine noise and no power. Okay, so the diesel was Total but still...

I'm pretty sure the manifold is warped but how can I suggest subtly to LR that they skim it, rather than just whack another gasket on? Whistle Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Wouldn't want it skimmed should be replaced.

Whenever I am in France I try and keep away from Total diesel. My Puma always runs very rough on it and power is down. BM52

Sounds like your Defender has character....... the temperament of a real woman. Imagine the reaction if you took your wife to McDonalds for an anniversary meal.......

Sounds like something is warped and needs changing. But unfortunately they will opt for the cheapest option most of the time and that will be the £10 gasket rather than a £1000 manifold. Maybe take a bottle of whisky in with you when you see the service manager Wink

it will be the turbo flange that is warped take it off and just get a flat bed to use and using wet and dry sand it till flat and then refit with new gasket i tried copper gaskets adn all sort but the best i came up with was genuine gasket new studs and nuts and a touch of exhaust paste seemed to the best solution

Thanks all.

Yobbie - true, that's the most straightforward fix but I'm weighing up the benefits of "correcting" a known part against getting another crap one. It was Steve's post about skimming the flange that brought me to the idea. Seems to have worked for him Thumbs Up

The vehicle is still under warranty so I'm loathed to try serious surgery yet. The dealer is good, so I'll let them have another crack.

One thing that just occurred to me (had to move the Landy to get the Audi dug out of the snow) is that perhaps I'm being stupid - when the turbo gaskets went before, the sound was always a loud whistling. This time the sound is f Censored ing loud and "fatter" (more like a tractor). Smells a lot worse too. Perhaps I'm just assuming it's the turbo again when it's actually the exhaust blowing near the manifold. I've never heard this noise before but YouTube is my friend. I would be MUCH happier about that.

I know I should get off my fat ar$e and go do some digging around but although it's warmed up to minus 7 outside I'm not tempted just yet.

Cheers guys, I'll update

Here's the sound:

Any experienced ears? I need to decide if I can safely drive 30 km (although the smoke will probably kill me...)

I know Embarassed but it's snowing heavily now too. You can't see where the smoke's coming from just by looking under the bonnet (had my son revving it up). I'll get the turbo cover off if the weather improves.

I was just panicking. The weather is sh*t at the moment (ploughs keep burying our exit) and I rely on the 110 for hospital runs.

Just occurred to me that the turbo whistle sounds fine on the video so I guess it's unlikely to fragment... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

If it is tractor sound it is probably pre-turbo. As above- just pop the bonnet and look inside, you will see black marks where it is blowing.

Thanks Whip - your English is fine Wink

It sounds as though it is the turbo again (I still hope it's something else) - I hope to get a proper look tomorrow when it's supposed to warm up a bit here Rolling Eyes

Cheers

Well f Censored k me Shocked

Got the heat shield off and 2 studs were gone and the top one had lost its nut!!! Gasket was dangling from what was left.

WTF is going on. Its had 3 gaskets now, the first time the dealer said the studs were loose. How hard can it be to design a manifold joint that doesn't fall apart Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad aaaargh

Anyway, I happened to have 2 stainless bolts and a nut of appropriate size and inserted them. And guess what? It's perfect - doesn't even whistle on full load. So no dealer visit or new gasket required.

So... here is my last question (and I'm probably going to re-post it): Do you recon it's better to replace the studs (again) and use nuts, or use bolts? If bolts, carbon steel or stainless? I know carbon steel is stronger but I don't think the bolts need to be particularly strong, just stay tight on repeated heating and cooling.

Cheers guys

Exactly that had happened to me, indeed the engine was more pleasant after the repair, that held approximately 4000 km with 2000 of tracks(runways);
Now of returns in the Alps, I have the impression that it begins again, I have again some soot on the front right wing , and an impression of loss of power and . I how wonder to adjust definitively this probleme.
