Update - I've had the turbo bolted on with carbon steel bolts for a week now and no major problems. The gasket leaks slightly but no sound and barely any smell. I've re-tightened the bolts a couple of times in the first 2 days after heating and cooling had settled them in. This is something the LR dealer couldn't do and may have been part of the problem
I'll put the new Nak gasket on when the weather improves. I did have a thought though - if the manifold face is slightly warped (curved), why not "sculpt" the gasket towards the corners a little to get a better fit? It's a couple of mm thick so there's plenty of room for shaving 1/4 mm or so... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I only needed to take off the cover above the turbo - 3(?) bolts on top of the manifold and 2 lower down. I'm only talking about the bendy corrugated aluminium cover, nothing more serious than that. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge This is the condition under my heat shield. Mine's a 2.2. There is this clamp that goes around the pipes which when I remove, shows that the 2 connecting face is not fully sealed and has a gap, this clamp is also not fully sealing, so is this the problem? It's blowing all the soot over and I get that woosh woosh, lots of wind sound with no real power?
