Turbo - new noise .. help please
Hi

I've got a new noise from my turbo. I am used to quite a noisy turbo when spinning up, almost a 'Whizz' noise, but now I have suddenly got a noise of lots of air escaping when the turbo spins up under load.

For example, at about 2800 in 6th when I accelerate I get a loud constant 'whoosh' of air noise .. back off a bit and it disappears. There is a slight reduction/hesitation in power.

Any idea what it is?

I've checked for obvious intercooler pipe splits etc .. could it be a turbo gasket?

Thanks 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

if it was gasket you would be getting exhaust fumes under bonnet , intercooler hose small splits can be hard to find , best get someone to rev it and look , listen

It is easy enough to check the turbo manifold for leaks by removing the heat shield and having a look for any soot deposits.

I used a boroscope to check the bottom of the turbo flange for leaks.

I have had two leaks from the intercooler hoses over the past 4 years and a bit of investigation found the problem
Below is the intercooler pipe going into the inlet manifold and at first glance it looks ok?

But once I separated the pipes the cause of my issue became clear, it had delaminated and there was a rip that only became visible when the hose was pinched. So under boost pressure the hose expansion was enough to cause the rip to vent. Cured this by fitting SS steel intercooler pipes :

The second time was due to the boost pipe being loose on the turbo:

There is also a service bulletin ref a plastic stud on the inner face of the wheel arch line that over time holes the nearby intercooler pipe:

Also check that your actual inter cooler has not failed, cracked etc.

that's worth looking into, theres a coolant hose to next the fuel bleeder that chaffs two. Top right hand side of engine bay as you look at the engine, covered mine up with a bit of old heater hose and secured the bleeder just in case.

Possibly not though there will be increased risk of particles entering your engine as it is on the "clean" side of the air filter.

Might be worth wrapping it with some cloth tape to seal it temporarily until you can fit a new one.

If you run with the holed pipe you may find that you'll drop into limp mode with the MIL illuminated due to boost problems. A very short term fix can be achieved with duct tape, but the heat tends to make it unstuck. A better temp fix is to cut the damaged piece out and replace with a short metal pipe, or wrap a cut up drink can round the hole and secure with a hose clip.

self amalgamating tape here would work too for a repair, obviously not now needed but added in case others have issues. Cheers
