Personally I think it's a bad idea Scotland leaving, but if they do leave then they should go the whole hog and do it for themselves. Only situation under which I would be mightily off is if we end up supporting an "independent" country's economy, healthcare, banks, infrastructure etc. Either stay in and shut up (albeit a small number) moaning (Scots already have the best deal of any country in the UK IMO) or get out and show us how it's done if you think your better off. Seriously though I know most scots I've spoken to love being part of the UK, and I recognise that all that's great about this increasingly under appreciated country has been built by all four great nations which comprise it. (Look at our military, ( albeit long-gone)empire, language, legal system, culture etc . Rule Britannia Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Not saying they're particularly good, but was Blair/Brown doing any better? No they weren't. Not sure what the alternative is (which DOES support Scotland wanting independance) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) Last edited by MartinK on 13th Feb 2014 11:21am. This is a decision that Scots must make for Scotland, good luck to them whichever way they decide to go.
Personally i think we are all stronger together. Will throw up some strange questions like will Scots still be able to "migrate" to England to work as they will no longer be EU citizens and will they have to apply for a visa !!!!! 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

I think there should be a similar vote across the United Kingdom about the issue to "do you wish to keep Scotland as part of the United Kingdom" that may liven the debate !!!

The jist of it is I think that people are sick of centralisation and not localism. Most of them live in their London bubble and have no value about other areas nor care.

I'm not going to let my intense hatred of labour boil over here... Labour just sit there now poking jibes at the Tories good policies, and milliband is an idiot. Capitalist countries are stronger than socialist ones, end of. Will be voting Tory as soon as I get the chance. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Labours student loans were the problem..... Millions given out on that.
Their downfall IMO was when Brown took over. To be honest though the lot of em make a shambles of it all because they simply don't listen to people. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Also I'd imagine that a yes vote would trigger mass migration or the highest skilled people from Scotland into the UK which may have interesting consequences! Cheers, David

It's going to be an interesting debate leading up to the vote. Overall I can't help thinking that it's all motivated by Salmond and co's hubristic attitude mixed up with a touch of vanity. He thinks he's going to be the next King of Scotland and initially stated that he wanted complete independence and the ability to apply their own economic strategy. However, they then say that they'll keep the Queen as Head of State, oh and we'll keep Sterling currency too! How can it be independence if you have currency union and therefore can't set interest rates and have to submit to the UK fiscal policy?
The one amusing aspect is the potential impact on UK politics if the vote is a yes as it would decimate overnight the Parliamentary Labour party. It goes without saying that Cameron would love to see that happen but not at the cost of breaking up the Union. So we have all three parties playing the same tune but with one eye on the differing potential consequences! |

It is a bad idea for the people of Scotland being pushed through by power hungry politicians.
The Union is better together but if the people of Scotland decide to go their own way then good luck and I wish them well . Independence means just that though , making all your own choices and not a pick and mix from the table to suit 1 party. However I would still wish to support an independent Scottish country if it got into trouble due to our shared history of people. No reason why we can't have treaties in place to cover various contingencies. |

I'm in an interesting situation where I was born in England and I lived in England for 23 years and then moved to Scotland last year for work so I can see both sides of the coin. Personally it's a shambles, the White Paper was released and was an interesting read and sparked several debates at work. I know colleagues who will be voting yes and others no however one thing everyone could agree on is that it's not been thought through 100%. Independence isn't some little thing that you can just do one Friday afternoon it's a monumental step. There are far too many aspects of it that are "in a grey area". How can people can be expected to make a decision that will affect their jobs and livelihoods without knowing fully what is in store for them should Alex Salmond get his way. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)
Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! |

Me too - born in Yorkshire, moved here 22 years ago. I love Scotland - especially at weekends...awesome mountain biking, hillwalking, climbing & sea kayaking. The White Paper was far too vague for me. I guess this whole thread is symptomatic of the way we'll be for the next few months till September...as the details get sorted out. However, a David says at the start:
Salmond seems to think he can have his cake & eat it...I think he's being a prat. Why should the English, Welsh & N Irish make this easy. Go your own way, or don't, but it's one or the other IMHO. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
