OH CRAP!!!
So, hit by a freak snowstorm today and well, let's just say that the anti lock brakes OEM tires with 25K km on ice and slow speed just don't cut it...Honestly officer, I tried to stop, I was braking for a long time...
left front quarterpanel toast as well as needing a new bumper.
At least no one got hurt..pretty hard at 10 mph... 2008 Defender 110 60 year Edition (sold unfortunately)

Sorry to hear that.

I don't think much works on ice (apart from chains). In fact, you're at a disadvantage being heavier than most.

The only thing you might be able to do next time would be to keep driving, drop the gears and use your 4wd to drive out of trouble (not much help if you're heading for a dead end).

Hope the damage isn't too costly. Make sure you check that the chassis rails haven't been damaged. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Proper studded tyres, as often used here, will do absolutely wonders. Also I have heard that other non-studded tyres will work better than those included by LR.

And, indeed, 4x4 will not help with braking at all.
