I“m very concern about the battery support system in the Defender.
Every time I try to clamp the battery to the standard supports without too much success and my big fear became a reality: Yesterday nigth my wife was heading to the farm in a rugged road and suddenlly all the ligths start to winkle. She stop the car and heard a crackle noise inside ans a very bad smell. She try to start again, but The Defender doesnt start at all. After that she was towed to the farm (fortunately 1 km only) by a Nissan truck (what a shame) Today she check the battery compartment and she found that the battery were completely lose inside the compartement. Regretably, the positive part made a contact with the compartment making a big shortcircuit and makin a hole in the compartment and that was the reason of this behavior. The battery voltage drop to 3.2 V due the shortcircuit Now, the battery was take down to be charged in the town. In my opinion the standard battery supports appear to be useless, and dont clamp the battery tightly as should do. So, guys some questions: 1.- Can the battery be rocovered? 2.- Wich kind of support you recomend to do not have again the same problem? Eduardo,
I have run a strop under the existing tray and secured the battery with the strop ratchet mechanism for added security. If the battery isn't that old I can see no reason why it cannot be recharged as long as the plates haven't warped due to the short circuit. A capacitance check carried out after a charge would determine how badly affected it may be. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
