I've ordered a new 110 SW XS for delivery in March.
According to the build sheet the dealer gave me, Side Runners are fitted as part of the XS spec. I've asked him whether these are the same as the Side Protection Runners in the current brochure and on the LR accessories website (http://accessories.landrover.com/gb/en/def...10-models/ part # LR008375)? I'm still waiting for him to come back to me with the answer... does anyone on here know? Thanks, Dave |

As far as I'm aware the XS steps are still the same as they've ever been - these: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic11542.html 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hello again,
Nope, these are purely steps, made from quite a thin walled tube and will do little in the way of protecting from a side impact. There are lots of sturdier items available aftermarket but they tend to replace the sill trims and are therefore a lot higher and not very effective as steps |

the steps themselves are fairly thin, yes, but they're pretty solid and well mounted and will take some damage!
you're much better off with them, could save you ripping a door or sill off if you're unlucky! and i personally think they look pretty good if you keep them clean and don't let the drain holes get blocked (and filled with mud) - in which case they will have rusted out in 5/6 years time. mine are 4yo and are still perfect PS welcome! Thanks Martin - that's good to know.
Have you (or anyone else) any recommendations on the best step/protection compromise? Protection is more important to me than the step functionality, though my wife will be driving the truck so something that does both would be perfect! |

oh and sorry just read your question again, no they probably wouldn't be any good for side impact protection, but theyre good for protecting your doors from other people's car doors in car parks!
once saw a woman in a corsa open her door into my car pretty forcefully, went over to cheek damage and there was a nice dent in her door but not a mark on my step Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

benefits of a defender, with sticky out wheels and side steps, theres not a inch of bodywork on my car that can be hit by the average car door, only something with a door higher than the side steps

I was thinking more along the lines of crash protection from another car hitting the side of the truck - I've seen other threads that discuss the merits of various runners/rock/tree sliders which go some way to protecting against this.
I'm totally new to defenders, and I'm still trying to work out which aftermarket runners/sliders offer protection and function as a step - without spending silly money. Are the other OE bars from Land Rover (the twin tube ones: http://accessories.landrover.com/gb/en/def...ouble-cab/ ) any sturdier? |

do a search on "110 rock sliders", these double up as steps and may assist with any side on impact, I had a pair from Dave-H, weighed a lot but were pretty solid.

Thanks everyone. I'm now immersing myself in the various views on rock sliders via the forum search.
Thanks David for the ebay link. They ain't as pretty as the OEM sliders from LR, but given the views on here, I would feel more confident this sort of thing can take an impact and provide some protection to the occupants of the truck. Cheers, Dave |

To be honest I don't imagine the difference between full on tree sliders and standard side steps would be huge in a side impact. There are too many variables to consider and even if strong they are only a small area of the side
If you weren't going to go serious off roading I would leave the standard steps; they suit the car well and offer better protection than without.. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I agree, even the rock sliders would be of little use in a side on impact IMHO.
Just steer clear of the other twin tube style steps offered. These rot like no bodys business and don't look half as nice when on either. The factory fit xs side steps look great and are a nice useable step too |

Thanks everyone. If there's no material benefit to be gained by changing to rock/tree sliders, I will likely stick with the factory fit steps.
One further related question - from what I can gather, Defenders are considered more vulnerable than some other vehicles to side impacts in a crash situation... Can anyone recommend anything that can be done to improve this? (I'm already looking at discrete roll-cages to improve occupant protection in a roll-over) Cheers, Dave |
