This topic inevitably comes up a lot, and I have just accepted that the defender isn't a modern vehicle, and as such the only way to be safe is to drive safely and slowly.
In a low speed accident when airbags wouldn't deploy in a car with them, I think a defender is fine and weight/size is on your side. But a high speed accident or an accident when you're the smaller car it doesn't bare thinking about. I don't think there's a lot to be done in that situation short of fitting a full on roll cage. However, numerous articles have been published claiming that the defender is the safest vehicle to drive in the uk measured by accidents or deaths (not sure which) per driver/vehicle. However I'm sure that this is more to do with the attitude to driving that it gives you and the kind of people who buy/drive them. Modern cars with crumple zones/crash members/front and side airbags will show up a defender badly. But i beleive that in an accident, anything can happen and the only way to stay safe is to drive safely! Don't let this give you a downer though, they're lovely cars and offer good visibility and a relatively composed driving style compared to some other basic 4x4s like the jimny/L200 etc Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |
