The battery should be well-ventilated if you're charging from dead to full, leaving the battery in place is fine as long as you leave the seat and lid off.

As above, went to it this morning and discovered I'd left my heated mirrors on overnight, I was distracted by my annoying boys last night. Luckily I have them wired up to my auxillary battery and they had pulled it down to just under 9V. About an hours worth of driving throughout the day and everything is back to normal.

Long drives. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Just put it on the C-tek with battery in place and without taking the seat or seatcover off. Connect the C-tek via the 12S plug, simple as that. A search will get this for instance....
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic20342.html?highlight=ctek And by the way, your battery box should be ventilated. If you look under your chassis, you will see a plactic ventilation pipe hanging from somewhere under the battery box. How do I know? http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic14789.html Eric You never actually own a Defender. The vent pipe is actually from the battery itself, rather than the battery box. Just one more reason for using a genuine replacement battery when the need arises. A CTEK charger should be fine charging the battery whilst the battery is in place and still connected. Some of the less intelligent old-fashioned "brute force and ignorance" chargers will make the battery gas, so disconnect and either remove from the vehicle or at least make sure that the vehicle is very well ventilated, also loosen or remove the caps on the cells of the battery. Do not underestimate the power of a hydrogen explosion! Many years ago the battery on a large Volvo BM loading shovel exploded as I was starting the machine, and it was very spectacular! Fortunately no-one was nearby and I was protected by the vehicle, but bits of battery travelled about 30 yards and everything was drenched in acid. Not fun at all! On that occasion the battery wasn't on charge but had been recently, and the explosion seemed to have been initiated by ice which had formed on the battery, although to this day we're not quite sure exactly how it happened. A similar explosion inside a Defender doesn't bear thinking about - it would certainly cause very extensive damage to both the vehicle and the occupant and I imagine that both would be write-offs. |

Supacat, are you sure of that? You RH drivers run the risk of getting electrocuted by bad contacts in all the electric connections under your drivers seats. Lucas, etc. you know.... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Adding to that, if the battery(ies) beneath my seat explodes, I will be protected by the seat box cover, seat and my ample posterior, as I am ejected to safety (James Bond-style) through the ridiculously flimsy roof. From my parachute high above, I will be able to watch the rest of the vehicle slowly dissolve... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Why aren't they wired to the ign./aux. side so they go off with the key? |

Because I put them in, my decision to run them off a permanent live, but not off the primary battery so, as they did yesterday morning, when they get left on through my incompetence then I can still start and drive away, giving myself a kick up the rear to pay more attention.

Due to the fact my Defender gets irregular use I am regularly topping up my battery with a charger which can be irksome. I am thinking of a permanent fit of one of these smaller discreet chargers and an aircraft grade electrical connector on the side of the seat box to connect it to the mains. The positive charging lead could also be hard wired through a fuse on my Blue Sea and the negative through a pushbutton illuminated switch to prevent backfeeding the charger when not in use. Connect the unit, push the button and away you go.

Good idea - and just fit a diode to prevent back-feeding perhaps? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
